We previously reported that Jennifer Lopez was garnering Oscar buzz for her new movie musical Kiss of the Spider Woman. Unfortunately for her, however, it appears that this may not be happening after all, as the film has flopped at the box office.

Lopez ‘Heartbroken’ As New Movie Flops

Lopez, 56, has been left “heartbroken” after Kiss of the Spider Woman bombed at the box office upon its release on October 10. The movie made just $840,000 in its opening weekend. That number is abysmally low, given the fact that the film cost $30 million to make and millions more to market.

This one has hit Lopez hard, as she had been hoping to score her first Oscar nomination for the movie.

“She poured her soul into this,” an insider told Yahoo News. “She thought it would be her A Star Is Born moment.”

After the movie premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, Lopez began garnering Oscar buzz in the Best Supporting Actress category. Despite many close calls over the years, Lopez has never been nominated for an Oscar. That makes this failure all the more disappointing for her.

“Jennifer feels like she can’t catch a break,” the insider added. “Between the movie, her tour struggles, and the Ben [Affleck] drama, it’s been one hit after another — and not the kind she wants.”

Though Kiss of the Spider Woman hasn’t been the hit that Lopez was hoping for, the source concluded by saying that she is a “fighter” who will “turn this pain into power.”

Lopez Was ‘Waiting’ For ‘A Role Like This’

While promoting Kiss of the Spider Woman, Lopez has been open about just how much this role meant to her.

“I had never seen Kiss of the Spider Woman onstage,” Lopez recently told Extra back in August. “I had never seen the movies from the ’80s… When I read it, I was just like, ‘I can’t believe I was laughing. I was crying, I was reading it out loud, and I knew it was something like I had been waiting for my whole life, a role like this.”

Lopez had to fight back tears when the movie received a standing ovation at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year.

“I’ve been waiting for this moment my whole life,” she explained. “The reason I even wanted to be in this business is because my mom would sit me in front of the TV and [West Side Story] would come on once a year. I was mesmerized and was like, ‘That’s what I want to do.’ This is the first time I actually got to do it.”

Lopez Filmed This During ‘Difficult’ Time

This comes after Lopez admitted that she filmed this movie during a “difficult” time in her life.

“It was one of the most beautiful moviemaking experiences I’ve ever had, and also at a difficult time in my life,” Lopez told Out Magazine. “But it … just filled a part of me that was waiting to kind of come alive for so long.”

Indeed, Lopez filmed Kiss of the Spider Woman in the spring of 2024. Though the world didn’t know it at the time, Lopez had already separated from Ben Affleck. She filed for divorce in August of 2024 after just two years of marriage.

In her filing, however, Lopez listed their date of separation as being in April. This confirms that Lopez was already privately dealing with their split while making this movie. It wasn’t until January of 2025 that their divorce was finalized.

While there’s still a chance that Lopez could score an Oscar nomination for Kiss of the Spider Woman, the fact that it’s a box office flop certainly won’t help her cause. Only time will tell how this all turns out for Lopez!
