It’s been six months since Jennifer Lopez finalized her divorce from Ben Affleck after just two years of marriage. Now, Lopez is opening up about the “difficult time” she had last year as this divorce was unfolding in front of the entire world.
Lopez, 56, filed for divorce from Affleck, 53, on August 20, 2024. In her filing, she listed their date of separation as being April 26, 2024.
Meanwhile, as she dealt with this heartbreak throughout the Spring of 2024, Lopez was also filming on her new movie Kiss of the Spider Woman, which is set to be released in October. In a new interview, Lopez is admitting that she was indeed going through a “difficult time’ in her life when she made this film.
Lopez’s ‘Difficult Time’
“It was one of the most beautiful moviemaking experiences I’ve ever had, and also at a difficult time in my life,” Lopez told Out Magazine. “But it … just filled a part of me that was waiting to kind of come alive for so long.”
According to its official synopsis on IMDB, Kiss of the Spider Woman tells the story of “Valentín, a political prisoner, shares a cell with Molina, convicted for public indecency. An unlikely bond forms as Molina recounts a Hollywood musical plot.”
Lopez plays Aurora, an actress who stars in the musical that Molina tells his cellmate about. The two men, who are played by Diego Luna and Tonatiuh, end up developing a deep emotional bond through this fantasy as the movie unfolds.
“This very intense experience they have of being locked in the cell together and helping each other survive, they’re able to see straight into [the] humanity in one another and fall in love,” Lopez explained.
It seems that this spoke to Lopez on a deeper level amidst her and Affleck’s divorce.
“To me, that is the real definition of love,” she continued. “It doesn’t matter what somebody looks like or where they’re from or who they are or what background — it’s just looking at a person and seeing their soul.”
Lopez is already garnering Oscar buzz for Kiss of the Spider Woman. Check out a trailer for the film in the video below.
Lopez’s History With Affleck
It should come as no surprise that Lopez struggled with her divorce from Affleck. Indeed, while they were married for just two years, their love story stretched back decades.
Lopez and Affleck met in December of 2001 on the set of their infamous movie Gigli. They became engaged the next year, only to shock fans by calling off their planned wedding in 2003 just days before it was set to take place.
Lopez and Affleck each went on to marry and divorce different people. Affleck married Jennifer Garner, an actress best known for starring in the hit TV show Alias, in 2005. They had three children together before they divorced in 2018.
Meanwhile, Lopez married the singer Marc Anthony, staying with him from 2004 until they divorced in 2014. He’s the father of her 17 year-old twins.
Lopez And Affleck Reunite
Lopez and Affleck reunited and quickly rekindled their romance in April of 2021. They went on to marry in July of 2022. Sadly, it didn’t take long for their marriage to go off the rails. Lopez filed for divorce in August of 2024, citing their date of separation as April 26 of that year, as we previously stated. Their divorce was finalized in January of 2025.
This has clearly been a very difficult time for Lopez both personally and professionally. Here’s hoping that Kiss of the Spider Woman is a hit, because Lopez could definitely use a win right now!
