The country music star Jelly Roll has been granted a full pardon by the Tennessee Governor Bill Lee.

Jelly Roll Gets Pardoned

Lee pardoned Jelly Roll, 41, of two robbery and drug felonies that were issued before 2010 in Davidson County.

“His story is remarkable, and it’s a redemptive, powerful story, which is what you look for and what you hope for,” Lee told the Associated Press.

“It was evident to me that this is a man who should get a pardon,” the governor later added to The Tennessean.

Lee pardoned a total of 33 people on Thursday afternoon, with Jelly Roll being one of them. The Tennessee governor told reporters that he had never met Jelly Roll before yesterday. The country music star visited the governor’s mansion to receive the pardon. Indeed, Jelly Roll hugged Lee in front of his Christmas tree and fireplace.

It should be noted that the pardon does not completely wipe Jelly Roll’s record completely clean. However, it does forgive two felony convictions from Davidson Count. The first was stemmed from a robbery that took place in 2003 for robbery. The second was for drug possession in 2008.

Jelly Roll’s Pardon Journey

Jelly Roll filed a pardon application in 2024. In April of that year, Davidson Sheriff Daron Hall, who manages the Nashville jail, wrote a letter to Lee asking him to pardon the singer. The sheriff wrote that Jelly Roll had an awakening of sorts in a jail he managed many years ago.

“I think he has a chance and is in the process of rehabilitating a generation, and that’s not just words,” Hall said on Thursday. “I’m talking about what I see we need in our country, is people who accept responsibility, accept the fact that they make mistakes and accept the fact that they need help.”

Earlier this year, the Tennessee Board of Parole recommended Jelly Roll for a pardon in a non-binding unanimous decision.

Jelly Roll told the board that he was seeking the pardon in order “to be an inspiration for people who are now where I used to be — to let them know that change is truly possible.”

“One of the reasons I’m asking for your recommendation … is because I’m looking to take my message of redemption … [across] the rest of the world,” he continued.

Jelly Roll also explained to the parole board that he fell in love with songwriting during his time behind bars. He said that this “would end up changing my life in ways that I never dreamed imaginable.”

Jelly Roll’s Criminal History

Jelly Roll has long been open about his lengthy criminal history. Indeed, he’s been jailed more than 40 times for various drug charges. His first arrest came when he was just 14 years-old.

“I was in and out of there for about three, three and a half years,” Jelly Roll previously told People Magazine about his teenage incarcerations. “I spent a lot of time there and eventually got charged as an adult for a crime I committed as a juvenile.”

“And I just realized that was the most impactful thing that ever happened in my life,” he added. “And the darkest moments of my life still were being that 15-year-old scared kid spending Thanksgiving away from his family.”

While appearing on The Joe Rogan Experience last week, Jelly Roll revealed that he was seeking a pardon.

“Well, this is interesting. This is a slippery slope for me. I am up for a pardon this year. My paperwork has been sent to my governor, and he considers pardons every December. So, every day, I’m just kind of praying,” he admitted.

“Tennessee has a zero forgiveness policy for violent offenders,” he explained. “So, I would be pardoned, but I wouldn’t be exonerated. The charges aren’t completely gone.”

‘Path To Redemption…’

Jelly Roll concluded by saying that he believes that Tennessee should offer a “path to redemption” in the state.

“I want to go to them and go, ‘Look, I understand if you’ve ever raped somebody or killed somebody, but I think that every … it should … there should be some path to redemption.’ Even if it takes 30 years,” the country music star argued.

The way Jelly Roll has completely turned his life around is nothing short of inspiring to millions of fans. In the end, this pardon could not be more well-deserved.

God bless you, Jelly Roll!
