It’s been two months since the legendary Oscar-winning star Diane Keaton passed away at the age of 79. Now, her First Wives Club co-star Goldie Hawn is speaking out to pay an emotional tribute to her.

Hawn Honors Keaton

Keaton died of pneumonia on October 11. Her death came as a shock to many, as most of even her closest friends had no idea that she was even ill. On Wednesday night, Hawn broke down in tears as she honored Keaton at The Hollywood Reporter’s Women in Entertainment Gala. There, she recalled the moment that she learned that Keaton had died.

“I happened to learn when I was in my backyard, and I went over to my backyard to my rose garden,” said Hawn, 80. “I just looked down. She can’t be gone. She just cannot be gone. No one like that should ever die. She just brought so much joy, so much life, so much exuberance. She was like lightning in a bottle.”

“[Keaton] was just an extraordinary human being,” Hawn continued as she became visibly emotional. “She’s an amazing actress. Look what she can do. Look at this natural aspect of how her body and mind work together and how she’s able to bring us joy and give us emotion and all of it. But look what else she did. She wrote books. She was interested in many things, not just acting and producing, but also directing.”

Hawn Doubles Down

Hawn went on to lament that it’s impossible to express the essence of Keaton in something like a speech or a social media post.

“It’s like trying to explain what a taste of a tangerine tastes like,” she explained.

In this same speech, Hawn talked about the time that she and Keaton spent together filming the 1996 hit movie The First Wives Club.

“When we did this movie, we worked together, she was very tenacious,” she recounted. “She’s an incredibly hard worker. At the same time, she would come into the makeup trailer, which is my favorite thing, and she had a different hat on every day.”

‘How Do We Say Goodbye?’

Hours after Keaton passed away, Hawn took to Instagram to honor her dear friend.

“Diane, we aren’t ready to lose you,” Hawn wrote. “You’ve left us with a trail of fairy dust, filled with particles of light and memories beyond imagination.”

“How do we say goodbye? What words can come to mind when your heart is broken? You never liked praise, so humble, but now you can’t tell me to ‘shut up’ honey,” she concluded. “We agreed to grow old together, and one day, maybe live together with all our girlfriends. Well, we never got to live together, but we did grow older together. Who knows… maybe in the next life. Shine your fairy dust up there, girlfriend. I’m going to miss the hell out of you.”

Keaton was a true legend, and there will never be another one like her. It’s clear that two months later, her loved ones like Hawn are still struggling with her death. Please join us in saying a prayer for them.

Rest in peace, Diane Keaton.
