In the crazy word of Hollywood, it’s rare to find a relationship that is actually able to stand the test of time. That’s what makes the 42-year relationship of stars Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell so special.
In a new interview, Hawn is revealing the secret behind her decades-long romance with Russell. According to Hawn, sexual attraction is the “key” to the love that she and Russell share.
While appearing on The Dan Buettner Podcast, Hawn opened up about her relationship with Russell, which began back in 1983. She explained that “freedom” has been a cornerstone of their relationship from the very beginning.
“I have a relationship with birds,” said Hawn, 80. “I’m a bird. And you leave the cage door open, I may never fly out. But if you close that door, for my freedom and my independence, I would probably take all my feathers off.”
Hawn went on to say that it’s “a freedom of self” that makes her relationship with Russell, 74, so successful.
“It’s a freedom of basically not melding into somebody else, when you’re copacetic on certain areas and you have freedom,” she explained.
A Strong Sexual Attraction
When asked why she’s kept choosing Russell for 42 years, Hawn’s answer was was simple.
“Because I have respect for him because I think he’s an amazing person,” she stated. Hawn added that she’s “also very sexually attracted to him. And that’s important. If you have a long-term sexual relationship, that’s actually really healthy. He’s my sexual object.”
This isn’t the first time that Hawn has eluded to her sex life with Russell.
“You have to have good sex,” she told E! News in 2024. “Because sex is something that connects you and creates more belonging. People who have healthy sexual relationships usually last a lot longer. But it’s not just because of the act, it’s because of the warmth and the intimacy that it creates.”
In her latest interview, Hawn described Russell as being “so smart.” She also gushed that he’s “such a great actor, and I find him incredibly handsome to this day. Kids love him. We’re an unbelievably happy family — most of the time. … There’s a cohesiveness. Why would I want anybody who is perfect? There is no such thing.”
Hawn And Russell Defend Never Marrying
Despite being madly in love for decades, Hawn and Russell have never married. They’ve addressed their decision not to marry in the past.
“We constantly got asked, ‘When are you going to get married? Why aren’t you married?’ ” Russell told Variety in 2023. “And we were like, ‘Why does anybody care about that?’ We’d asked our kids if they cared about it. They didn’t. We didn’t.”
Hawn dismissed the idea of ever marrying Russell in her most recent interview.
“Even if we did get married, it wouldn’t make any difference because it’s 42 years now,” she concluded.
Hawn And Russells History
Hawn and Russell first met back in 1966 when they co-starred in the comedy musical western The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band. She was 21 years-old at the time, while Russell was only 16. Hawn later recalled that at that time, she found Russell to be “adorable, but much too young.”
It wasn’t until 1983 that their relationship turned romantic when they co-starred in Swing Shift. In 1986, Hawn gave birth to their son Wyatt.
Russell was also an active stepfather helping her raise her children Oliver, 49, and Kate, 46, who she shares with her ex-husband Bill Hudson, 76. Yesterday, Kate was nominated for her second Oscar for her work in the movie Song Sung Blue.
Meanwhile, Hawn was stepmother to Russell’s son Boston, 45, who he shares with his ex-wife Season Hubley, 74.
Whether Hawn and Russell are married or not, it’s clear that their love for each other is very real. We’d like to wish them many years of happiness to come.
