The Hollywood star Eric Dane, best known for starring on the hit television series Grey’s Anatomy, died on Thursday at the age of 53. This came less than a year after Dane announced that he had been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease.
Dane Passes Away
“With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS,” Dane’s family told People Magazine. “He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world.”
“Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight,” the family’s statement then continued. “He will be deeply missed, and lovingly remembered always. Eric adored his fans and is forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support he’s received. The family has asked for privacy as they navigate this impossible time.”
Dane is survived by his two teenage daughters: Billie Beatrice, 15, and Georgia Geraldine, 13. He shared them with his wife Rebecca Gayheart, who is an actress.
Dane’s History
Dane was born in San Francisco, California on November 9, 1972. He found acting accidentally in his youth.
“I was a water polo player in high school and my season was short. And I ended up getting roped into playing Joe Keller in All My Sons. Dead serious. And I fell in love with it,” Dane previously said. “I was, like, this is the greatest feeling ever!”
After graduating, he moved to Los Angeles with “40 bucks in my pocket,”
“I ended up partying for the next eight years. I got into a lot of trouble,” he later confessed.
Dane quickly started landing guest spots on television shows like Saved by the Bell, The Wonder Years, Roseanne and Married… with Children and joined Gideon’s Crossing. He also appeared on two seasons of the cable series Charmed.
Dane’s big break came in 2006, when he was cast in Grey’s Anatomy as Dr. Mark Sloan, also known as Mcsteamy. His character was so popular that he quickly became a sex symbol.
“It just kind of made sense,” Dane told Glamour in 2019 about leaning into the sensuality of his character in real life. “I felt like I had an artistic obligation to not shy away from that part of the character. And to a degree, there’s a lot of me in that guy. But I think at the end of the day, you tend to give people what they’re asking for, because it’s the path of least resistance.”
“I love that character; I just didn’t want to play that guy for the rest of my life,” he added. “It’s counterintuitive to what any actor wants to do with their career.”
Later in his career, Dane starred in the hit HBO series Euphoria, which premiered in 2019.
Dane’s ALS Battle
Sadly, Dane revealed in April of last year that he had been diagnosed with ALS.
“I have been diagnosed with ALS, I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter,” Dane said at the time.
“I wake up every day, and I’m immediately reminded that this is happening,” he later added in a June interview. “It’s not a dream.”
Dane’s wife Gayheart filed for divorce in 2018. However, she then filed to have the divorce dismissed in March of 2025.
“I mean, we’re definitely dealing with something that has brought us all together, and Eric will always be my family, whether we’re married or not, or living in the same house or not, but yeah, we are closer, but we don’t like the reason why,” Gayheart said after making that filing. “It’s a horrible disease, and I wish that there was a cure. I hope they find one soon, because it is just so sad.”
Dane is survived by his wife and their two daughters.
Rest in peace, Eric Dane.
