Emma Roberts Addresses Rumors She’s Playing Britney Spears In a Biopic About the Troubled Singer

Emma Roberts, the niece of the A-list Hollywood star Julia Roberts, is finally addressing rumors that she’s been cast as Britney Spears in a biopic of the singer.

Spears’ longtime assistant recently suggested that Roberts, 33, play the 42 year-old “Oops!…I Did It Again” singer in a biopic. Roberts was quick to react to this by saying that she’s more than game, as she’s been preparing for the role for the last twenty years.

“I was like, I love her assistant,” she told Cosmo in response. “I mean, it’s my true dream to play Britney Spears.”

“It’s a rumor, but I hope maybe it’ll come true,” Roberts admitted. “I mean, I remember I locked myself in my room and listened to In the Zone and said, ‘I cannot leave this room until I memorize every word.’”

Roberts went on to say that she is a huge fan of Spears.

“I mean, I sing Britney to my son in the bath all the time,” she explained. “I’m always like, ‘God, he must think I’m so weird.’ That’s some millennial parenting.”

Roberts’ History

This came after it was announced that Spears memoir “The Woman In Me,” which came out in October of last year, is being made into a movie. Spears’ longtime assistant Felicia Culotta responded to this by telling TMZ that Roberts would be perfect for the leading role.

Not only do Spears and Roberts physically resemble one another, they have career parallels as well. They both got their start as singing child stars, with Spears beginning her career on The Mickey Mouse Club. Meanwhile, Roberts launched her career as a child on Nickelodeon’s Unfabulous, where she got to showcase her own musical talents.

Roberts comes from Hollywood royalty, as she is the daughter of Julia Roberts’ Oscar-nominated brother Eric Roberts. She is best known for starring on television shows like American Horror Story and in movies like Madame Web.

‘The Woman In Me’

The Woman In Me skyrocketed to the top of the New York Times’ best-sellers list as soon as it came out last fall. A bidding war quickly ensued between movie studios to turn it into a film, with Universal recently winning the rights to the project.

Wicked director Jon M. Chu has already signed on to helm the biopic, and Universal’s Marc Platt will produce it. No official casting choices have been announced at this time, however.

Spears reportedly has control over both the script and the casting for this project, so Roberts will need to win her over if she wants the part. Culotta also said that the former E.T. actress Drew Barrymore would be a good fit to play Spears. Another casting choice that she suggested was the former Call Me By Your Name star Timothée Chalamet for the role of Spears’ ex-boyfriend Justin Timberlake.

While this biopic is still in its early stages, Culotta is sure that it will be an Oscar contender. We certainly can’t wait to see it when it finally comes to fruition!
