The legendary singer Elton John has made the sad announcement that he is now completely blind in one eye after battling a serious infection.
John Is Blind In One Eye
John, 77, dropped this bomb at the opening night of his musical adaptation of The Devil Wears Prada in London.
“I haven’t been able to come to many of the previews because, as you know, I have lost my eyesight,” John told the audience.
“So it’s hard for me to see it, but I love to hear it and, boy, it sounded good tonight,” he added.
This came days after John told Good Morning America that he is now blind in his right eye, and his remaining eye isn’t much of a help!
“It’s been four months now since I haven’t been able to see, and my left eye is not the greatest,” he lamented. “There’s hope and encouragement that it’ll be OK, but I’m kind of stuck at the moment because I can do something like this, but going into the studio and recording, I don’t know.”
John went on to say that he can no longer read song lyrics.
“It kind of floored me,” he admitted. “I can’t see anything. I can’t read anything, I can’t watch anything.”
Watch John talk more about this in the video below.
John’s Eye Infection
John took to Instagram back in September to reveal that his vision had been negatively impacted by an eye infection.
“Over the summer, I’ve been dealing with a severe eye infection that has unfortunately left me with only limited vision in one eye,” he wrote. John added that he was “healing, but it’s an extremely slow process and it will take some time before sight returns to the impacted eye.”
“I am so grateful for the excellent team of doctors and nurses and my family, who have taken such good care of me over the last several weeks,” John continued. “I have been quietly spending the summer recuperating at home, and am feeling positive about the progress I have made in my healing and recovery thus far.”

John’s Busy Year
Prior to this summer, John had remained as busy as ever. In January, he officially became an EGOT winner. This came after he won his first Emmy for his Disney+ special Elton John Live: Farewell from Dodger Stadium.
Then, in March, John performed at his annual Oscars party. The event was known as the “Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Awards Viewing Party.” However, it was noted at the time that John struggled to walk the red carpet at this event after having undergone knee surgery in January.
Also in March, it was reported that John was in talks to make a musical about his life. At the Oscars party, John’s husband Furnish revealed that they had been discussing this for years.
“A catalogue musical, we are always looking at it,” Furnish, 61, told The Sun. “I haven’t found anything yet that really covers… I think if we wanted to do it, we would want to do it in a way that was really innovative and really exciting and different.”
“We’re open to any great ideas and it’s a wonderful catalogue,” he added. “But at the moment, with the two other musicals, we’re quite busy as it is.”
We can only hope that John is able to recover some of the eyesight that he’s lost. Please join us in saying a prayer for him!
