Country music fans were stunned last year when Beyoncé recorded a cover of Dolly Parton’s iconic song “Jolene.” Many diehard Parton fans had serious misgivings about this, as “Jolene” is such a beloved classic that they did not feel like it needed to be covered by another artist.
Now, Parton is speaking out to reveal her real thoughts on Beyoncé cover of her song.
Parton’s True Thoughts On Beyoncé’s ‘Jolene’ Cover
“I’m a huge fan of hers — I mean, who’s not? Everybody loves her,” Parton, 79, told People Magazine of Beyoncé, 43. “I think she’s a magnificent artist, beautiful and the dancing in addition to the singing.”
Parton went on to say that she felt that Beyoncé had a “completely different take”on “Jolene.” One example of this is that while Parton sings “I’m beggin’ of you, please don’t take my man” in her “Jolene” song, Beyoncé boldly declares “I’m warning you, don’t come for my man” in her version.
“I was just honored that she, of course, did a completely different take on ‘Jolene’ than than my version of it,” Parton gushed. “Hers was more like, ‘Well, you’re not getting him, you’re not taking him, you’re going to go through me to get him.’ Mine was more like, ‘Please don’t take him!’ So I loved her interpretation.”
“As a writer, you like to hear how different people interpret your songs, and how they put their own spin and do their own take on it,” she continued. “But I was very proud of it, and I hope her tour does great, and I’m sure it will. People seem to be loving it.”

Parton Praises Cowboy Carter
Parton also praised Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter album. Indeed, she said that it was “really, really good.” Parton even made two appearances on the album. First, she portrayed a fake radio DJ queuing up the next set of songs in “Dolly P.” Later in the album, Parton is featured on Beyoncé’s track “Tyrant.”
Parton previously opened up about Beyoncé’s “Jolene” cover in May of last year.
“Well, I think it was very bold of her,” Parton told E! News at the time. “When they said she was gonna do ‘Jolene,’ I expected it to be my regular one, but it wasn’t.”
“But I love what she did to it,” she added. “And as a songwriter, you love the fact that people do your songs no matter how they do them.”
Parton went on to make it clear that she got a kick out of the lyrics Beyoncé added to “Jolene.”
“She wasn’t gonna go beg some other woman like I did,” she explained.

Parton Was ‘Very Proud’ Of Beyoncé
Even last year, Parton wanted the world to know that she was a fan of Beyoncé’s country music efforts.
“I was very proud of her album,” Parton said. “I thought she did a great job in country music, and I thought it was great.”
“And I was just happy she did ‘Jolene.’ I, of course, would have loved to have heard how she would have done it in its original way,” she continued. “But of course, you know, it’s Beyoncé. Yeah, her life is different than mine.”
If fans thought there was tension behind the scenes over Beyoncé covering one of Parton’s most popular songs, it seems that they were very wrong.
“We communicated when the album came out, when I was doing some of the little things to put on the album,” Parton previously told The Hollywood Reporter. “And we were sending each other flowers and little love notes and all that. So, yeah, it’s all good.”
While it can be argued that Beyoncé’s “Jolene” cover is good, nothing will ever top Parton’s original. In the end, Parton is a true legend who is often imitated, but can never be replicated!
