It’s been nearly 48 years since Elvis Presley passed away, but he is still one of the most beloved singers to this day. What many fans may be surprised to learn about Elvis, however, is that he was actually born with an identical twin brother. Find out what happened to this twin of the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll below.

Elvis Had An Identical Twin

Elvis was born in a two-room house in Tupelo, Mississippi to Vernon and Gladys Presley on January 8, 1935. He was followed 35 minutes later by his identical twin brother Jesse Garon.

Sadly, Jesse was stillborn, meaning he was dead at birth. This led to Elvis growing up as an only child.

The Presley family was tragically so poor at the time that they couldn’t afford a coffin for Jesse. Instead, they buried him in a shoebox, which they tied with a red ribbon. They then buried the shoebox at Priceville Memorial Gardens in Tupelo, with Jesse’s final resting place being next to the graves of his great aunt, Susan Presley, and great uncle, Noah Presley.

Jesse has also been given a memorial gravestone at the Meditation Garden in Elvis’ Graceland estate in Memphis, Tennessee. If alive today, Elvis and Jesse would have turned 90 earlier this month.

Elvis Thought About Jesse All Of His Life

Elvis never forgot Jesse as long as he lived. Larry Geller, Elvis’ friend, hairstylist and “spiritual advisor,” later said that “the life and death of his stillborn twin brother, Jesse Garon, was a precious mystery to Elvis, an indelible part of his life.”

Elvis reportedly “wanted to bare his soul about Jesse Garon” when he first met Geller.

“I learned over the years that this was one aspect of his life he rarely if ever spoke about,” Geller recalled. “But on this particular afternoon he opened the floodgates freely, revealing something so intimate that it was obvious that he was deeply burdened by the notion that he might have survived at the expense of his twin.”

Elvis allegedly told Geller, “Being a twin has always been a mystery for me. I mean, we were in our mother’s womb together, so why was he born dead and not me? He never even got his chance to live. Think about it, why me? Why was I the one that was chosen? An’ I’ve always wondered what would’ve been if he had lived, I really have. These kinds of questions tear my head up.”

Elvis Finds Success

Elvis went on to become one of the most successful musicians ever. It’s certainly interesting to think about what would have happened if there were two of him running around. Would Jesse have been just as talented in music as Elvis? Would Jesse and Elvis have performed in a musical act together? Unfortunately, we’ll never know!

While he got to live quite a bit longer than his twin, Elvis still left us far too early. Indeed, he died suddenly of cardiac arrest in 1977 at the age of 42. Though he is still dearly missed to this day, fans can find comfort in knowing that Elvis has been reunited with his beloved twin.

Rest in peace, Elvis and Jesse!
