Heading into the Oscars on Sunday night, it was widely believed that Demi Moore would win Best Actress for her work in The Substance. Unfortunately for her, however, this did not end up happening. Instead, the newcomer Mikey Madison took home the coveted Best Actress award for her role in Anora, which also won Best Picture.
Now, a lip reader is speaking out to reveal Moore’s real reaction to this unexpected loss.
Moore Reacts To Oscars Loss
When Moore, 62, lost the Oscar to Madison, 25, she could not hide her disappointment.
“Demi says ‘nice,’ but she isn’t smiling when she says it,” lip reader Nicola Hickling told Daily Mail. “Her body is almost nodding like she had to force herself to say it.”
Social media users were quick to defend Moore as soon as she lost. One person said that she was “robbed,” while another described her loss as being the “biggest snub in Oscars history.”
Even Madison seemed to be surprised that she actually won.
“I also just want to, again, recognize and honor the sex worker community. I will. Yes. I will continue to support and be an ally,” Madison said in her acceptance speech. “All of the incredible people, the women that I’ve had the privilege of meeting from that community has been one of the highlights of this incredible experience.”
Madison Honors Her Fellow Nominees
Madison went on to address her fellow nominees, including Moore. The other three actresses recognized were Cynthia Erivo (Wicked), Karla Sofía Gascón (Emilia Perez), and Fernanda Torres (I’m Still Here).
“I also just want to recognize the thoughtful, intelligent, beautiful, breathtaking work of my fellow nominees. I’m honored to be recognized alongside all of you,” Madison said. “This is a dream come true, I’m probably going to wake up tomorrow. Thank you so much, Sean [Baker], I adore you. This is all because of you. Thank you.”

Moore’s Golden Globe Win
Moore had been the frontrunner in the Best Actress race this entire awards season. Back in January, she managed to beat out Madison to win the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy.
“Oh wow. I really wasn’t expecting that. I’m just in shock right now. I’ve been doing this a long time, like over 45 years and this is the first time I’ve ever won anything as an actor,” Moore said at the time. “I’m just so humbled and so grateful.”
Moore went on to explain that thirty years ago, a producer dismissed her as a “popcorn actress.”
“At that time, I made that mean that this wasn’t something that I was allowed to have, that I could do movies that were successful, that made a lot of money, but that I couldn’t be acknowledged,” she said. “And I bought in, and I believed that, and that corroded me over time, to the point where I thought a few years ago that maybe this was it, maybe I was complete, maybe I’ve done what I was supposed to do.”
