The Late Show with Stephen Colbert is set to come to an end in May. CBS announced that it was canceling the show last year after it was revealed that the network is losing $40-50 million a year on it.
Much to the humiliation of host Stephen Colbert, who has made it clear that he desperately did not want the show to end, CBS just announced what will be replacing it. This has cemented the fact that The Late Show is about to truly be dead in the water.
Colbert’s Replacement Is Revealed
The Late Show’s final episode will air on Thursday, May 21. The very next night, CBS will begin airing Comics Unleashed With Byron Allen in the 11:35pm time slot. This will be followed by another Byron Allen-produced series, the comedy game show Funny You Should Ask, at 12:35am.
Allen was quick to celebrate the news that his shows will be replacing Colbert’s.
“I created and launched Comics Unleashed 20 years ago so my fellow comedians could have a platform to do what we all love — make people laugh,” Allen, founder, chairman and CEO of Allen Media Group, told The Hollywood Reporter. “I truly appreciate CBS’ confidence in me by picking up our two-hour comedy block of Comics Unleashed and Funny You Should Ask, because the world can never have enough laughter.”
Allen has long been open about wanting the 11:35pm time slot.
Allen has publicly expressed his interest in the 11:35 spot.
“Let me be clear … if they are looking for a show, my hand is already up,” Allen said in October of 2025. This was just two and a half months after CBS announced that it was canceling Colbert’s show.
“Fifty years I have been waiting for this moment, definitely I am going for it,” he added at the time.
Allen is set to host Comics Unleashed. The show will feature comedians doing short sets on topics provided by Allen. Comics Unleashed is reportedly a hybrid of a talk show and a stand-up comedy showcase.
Meanwhile, Funny You Should Ask will be hosted by Jon Kelley. It’s a game show that involves two contestants answering trivia questions with input from a group of comics.
Colbert’s Firing
Colbert and his fellow liberals have been in full meltdown mode over CBS canceling his show for months. Indeed, they claim that the decision was political in nature, as Colbert has been critical of President Donald Trump. CBS, however, has insisted that the move is “financial,” as they can no longer afford to lose $40-50 million a year on Colbert’s show.
“This is purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night. It is not related in any way to the show’s performance, content or other matters happening at Paramount,” CBS said in a statement after announcing Colbert’s cancelation in July of last year.
CBS graciously gave Colbert one more season instead of outright canceling his show immediately. They may regret that decision now, however. Last month, Variety ripped the final season of The Late Show as “not very good TV.” The outlet added that the show is out of touch with everyday Americans.
We can’t argue with that!
Colbert is a liberal elitist who has played a huge role in ruining late night. There was a time when late night was something that all Americans could enjoy, regardless of their political affiliations. These days, however, it consists of lectures from smug wealthy liberals like Colbert, who has no idea what the average American wants or needs.
We applaud CBS for having the courage to defy the hateful left by firing Colbert. In the end, Allen’s shows will likely be far funnier than The Late Show with Stephen Colbert ever was.
Have fun in irrelevancy, Stephen Colbert!
