Cody Simpson revealed he is unable to walk or talk “for some time” after suffering a series of health setbacks. They have forced the pop star into an unexpected period of recovery.
Health Update
The 29-year-old singer, who has recently been balancing his music career with competitive swimming, shared a candid update on Instagram this week. He explained that both his voice and mobility have been severely affected. This is due to a vocal cord hemorrhage and a knee injury.
Simpson posted a photo of himself on crutches, along with clips from a doctor’s visit when he injured his knee. He then opened up about the difficult few months he has been facing.
He wrote, “The universe is serving it to me this year! An update on where I’ve been: I’ve been on and off vocal rest for close to 3 months trying to heal a damaged vocal cord. We decided to operate to aid the recovery, then I dislocated my knee rehearsing for a new music video and we had to push surgery back to let my knee settle.”
The singer, known for his 2013 hit La Da Dee, said the situation has now left him unable to speak or walk for the foreseeable future.
He said, “I can’t walk or talk for some time now, and no singing or dancing for months to come. I’ve been pushing my body and mind for years now non-stop and I’m taking time to reflect and understand this for what it is: forced rest.”
Staying on Track
Despite the setback, Simpson insisted his creative plans remain on track, even if delayed. He is determined not to step away from music entirely.
He added, “The album and live shows have to wait, but I’ve got some work to share while I’m down for the count. You can’t hold me down! I’ll be back stronger [heart emoji].”
On a positive note, he revealed that parts of his upcoming music video were still completed despite his injuries. This suggests production continued around his condition.
He told fans, “FYI, we still shot the music video…”
To stay connected with fans during his recovery, Simpson has also been exploring alternative ways to share his new music.
In a message shared on his Instagram Story, he invited fans to a special listening event in Los Angeles.
He penned, “Since I can’t sing and can’t move. I wanted to find a creative way for some fans to be first to hear my next single.”
Earlier Posts
The update follows earlier posts in which Simpson first revealed the severity of his vocal injury. He explained that it stemmed from singing while unknowingly battling a sinus infection.
At the time, he told fans he had been forced into repeated periods of vocal rest after doctors discovered a serious hemorrhage on one of his vocal cords.
He said, “Just over a month ago we discovered a serious hemorrhage on one of my vocal cords. It occurred due to my overzealousness in the studio singing through a sinus infection I didn’t know I had.”
The condition led to cancelled TV and radio appearances and delays to his upcoming album, as well as uncertainty around planned live shows.
He added that he had been advised to remain silent to avoid more invasive surgery, which would require an even longer recovery period.
Behind the Scenes
Despite the challenges, Simpson has continued working creatively behind the scenes. The singer has been writing music as a lyricist and composing melodies on guitar while unable to sing.
He explained, “I’ve just been prescribed another 2 weeks of silence in hopes of avoiding a surgery which demands a much longer recovery process. I’m back in the studio now writing strictly as a lyricist on mute with my collaborators… Where there’s a will, there’s a way.”
