The country music star Blake Shelton and his wife Gwen Stefani are teaming up on an exciting new project. They’re making a contemporary version of the classic tale The Wizard of Oz.
Shelton And Stefani’s New Show
Shelton, 49, and Stefani, 55, have signed on to executive produce the television series Dorothy. This is set to be a modern retelling of L. Frank Baum’s beloved story.
“Set in present-day Manhattan, Dorothy will use the Yellow Brick Road as a metaphor for the challenges and choices facing young adults today,” Entertainment Weekly reported.
Shelton and Stefani will be executive producing Dorothy alongside Gina Matthews, who created it.
“We’re really excited about all the possibilities this show brings, and I’m so grateful that Gina shared the idea with me and Lee,” Shelton said. “I knew right away it was something Gwen would connect with. Her creativity and perspective are such a natural fit for this project.”
Stefani chimed in to add, “It’s a creative and modern take on a classic, and being part of something that blends music, emotion, and the character of Dorothy is inspiring to me.”
Other Producers Weigh In
Matthews, who is best known for producing movies like 13 Going on 30 and Isn’t It Romantic, couldn’t be more excited to be working on this project. Indeed, it’s clear that The Wizard of Oz is a story that means the world to her.
“I’ve been in love with The Wizard of Oz books since I was a child,” Matthews told Deadline. “The story reminds us of the qualities we need to get through hard times. Dorothy is a symbol of strength who shows us that with a little kindness — and a lot of grit — we can not only achieve great things but also lift up those around us. I’m excited to bring that message to the world, now more than ever.”
Joining them all as executive producers are Patrick Moran and Grant Scharbo.
“I’m really excited to work with this creative team,” said Moran. “I’m such a fan of everyone involved and couldn’t ask for a more exciting partnership as we reinvent this cherished IP.”
Scharbo added, “We’re thrilled to embark on this journey with Amazon and believe Dorothy will enchant a whole new generation of viewers.”
Wicked: For Good
At the time of this writing, Dorothy has no premiere date. However, Wizard of Oz fans will be getting their fix later this year with the release of Wicked: For Good, the sequel to 2024’s Oscar-nominated Wicked. Starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, that movie is set to hit theaters on November 21.
Director Jon M. Chu previously confirmed to Vanity Fair that Wicked: For Good will feature the arrival of Dorothy Gale in Oz. Of course, this iconic character was originally played by the legendary Judy Garland in the 1939 classic movie The Wizard of Oz.

Shelton and Stefani met in 2014 when they were both coaches on The Voice. They later married in 2021. It’s certainly exciting to see them embark on this new project together. Only time will tell how Dorothy ultimately turns out!
