It’s been over a month since the pop star Katy Perry went to space. She did so for eleven minutes as part of Jeff Bezos’ all-female Blue Origin crew.

Unfortunately for Perry, this has since blown up in her face. Indeed, the mission has been met with tons of backlash. It’s even been reported that Perry’s career has been “ruined” by this controversy.

Surprisingly enough, however, new reports indicate that Perry doesn’t believe her career is plummeting solely because of her Blue Origin flight. Instead, she thinks that this all started with her stint on American Idol.

Perry Blames American Idol For Her Downfall

“Katy is at the end of her rope. She’s faced a backlash that’s unprecedented for an artist who didn’t do anything criminal,” an insider told Radar Online. “And she’s convinced it all started with American Idol.”

The source went on to allege that Perry, 40, believes that American Idol producers destroyed her career by painting her as the show’s villain.

“Katy thought she was elevating her career as a judge on Idol, but now she says it left her overexposed and made her a punchline,” the insider continued. “Katy wishes she’d never done the show.”

In 2010 and 2011, Perry was arguably the biggest female pop star in the world. It was then that she became the first female pop star to have a Top 10 hit on the Billboard charts for 52 consecutive weeks. Nobody has broken that record in the years since, not even Taylor Swift, the current queen of pop.

Perry’s History On American Idol

In 2018, Perry signed a $25 million contract with American Idol. She served on the judging panel with Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie. Perry stayed with the show for seven seasons before leaving last year to focus more on her music. For this season, Perry has been replaced by the former American Idol winner Carrie Underwood.

Though Perry believes that American Idol was responsible for her downfall, other sources aren’t having any of it.

“Sure, Katy didn’t put her best foot forward on Idol,” a second insider said. “But she also worked with a dirtbag of a producer, and made an awful album that nobody bought.”

“You can’t blame that all on American Idol,” this source concluded.

Perry’s Blue Origin Backlash

Many would argue that it wasn’t American Idol that destroyed Perry’s career. Rather, it seems apparent that the actual cause was the backlash over her Blue Origin flight.

Perry travelled to space on the Blue Origin flight on April 14. She was joined by CBS Mornings host Gayle King, former NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, filmmaker Kerianne Flynn, civil rights activist Amanda Nguyen and Bezos’ fiancée, Lauren Sánchez.

While all of the women have been hit with backlash over the flight, Perry has gotten the worst of it by far. Last month, Perry herself took to social media to address the hate that she’s been receiving, saying that she felt like “a human Piñata.”

“When the ‘online’ world tries to make me a human Piñata, I take it with grace and send them love, cause I know so many people are hurting in so many ways and the internet is very much so a dumping ground for unhinged and unhealed,” she stated. “What’s real is seeing your faces every night, singing in unison, reading your notes, feeling your warmth. I find people to lock eyes and sing with and I know we are healing each other in a small way when I get to do that.”

“I’m not perfect, and I actually have omitted that word from my vocabulary, I’m on a human journey playing the game of life with an audience of many and sometimes I fall but… I get back up and go on and continue to play the game and somehow through my battered and bruised adventure I keep looking to the light and in that light a new level UNLOCKS,” Perry concluded.

Perry’s Alleged ‘Regrets’

Other sources close to Perry admits that she has some “regrets” about this entire ordeal.

“Katy doesn’t regret going to space. It was life changing. What she does regret is making a public spectacle out of it,” a source close to Perry told Daily Mail.

The insider went on to say that Perry “never expected the backlash.” In the end, she’s been left “disheartened” by the “uncalled for and upsetting” response to her Blue Origin mission.

As her popularity continues to plummet, Perry seems to be eager to play the blame game. If she really wants to save her career, perhaps it’s time for some introspection. In the end, that might be a better use of Perry’s time, rather than blaming outside forces like American Idol for her current problems.
