Ali Larter, who is preparing to star in the new Yellowstone spinoff Landman in November, is opening up about why she decided to leave Los Angeles and move to the “quiet grandness” of Idaho.
Larter Flees Hollywood For Idaho
A few years ago, Larter decided to flee the crazy world of Hollywood to move to Sun Valley, Idaho, with her husband Hayes MacArthur and their two children.
“We fell in love with the beauty of the mountains and their quiet grandness,” Larter, 48, told Rue Magazine. “Neither of us had ever lived in a small town before. People look out for each other. There’s a real sense of community here and we’re so happy to be a part of it.”
The stunning views in small town Idaho have also helped Larter to slow down and live in the moment. Something that’s near impossible in LA.
“Most of the time in my life, I feel like I’m going 1,000 miles an hour and these giant rocks chill me out,” she explained.
MacArthur, a 47 year-old actor who is about to star in the holiday movie Dear Santa alongside Jack Black, was quick to agree with his wife.
“The mountains have a way of grounding you and slowing you down—especially when you’re stuck in traffic because there’s a herd of elk blocking the road,” he said.

Larter And MacArthur Stumbled Upon Sun Valley
Larter and MacArthur found Idaho in a surprising way. During the COVID-19 pandemic, they decided to take a road trip out of Los Angeles with their kids Theodore and Vivienne and their dog Nala. At the time, the movie business was “at a total standstill,” so it felt like the perfect opportunity to hit the road.
“We figured it was an opportunity to go on an adventure as a family,” Larter recalled. “And we just started driving north.”
They fell in love with Sun Valley as soon as they got there. In 2022, they began building their dream home there, finishing it last year.
The 4,400-square-foot property is located on two acres of land. Larter stated that she wanted to build a home that “fit into the natural geography of Sun Valley but didn’t have that traditional ‘cabiny’ feel. We wanted walls of glass that showcase and invite the gorgeous scenery into the home.”

Larter To Star In Landman
Though she’s living in Idaho, Larter’s Hollywood career is still going strong. She will next star in Taylor Sheridan’s latest Yellowstone spinoff Landman alongside Billy Bob Thornton and Demi Moore.
“Set in the proverbial boomtowns of West Texas,” Landman is described as “a modern-day tale of fortune-seeking in the world of oil rigs…an upstairs/downstairs story of roughnecks and wildcat billionaires fueling a boom so big, it’s reshaping our climate, our economy and our geopolitics.”
Thornton stars on the show as an oil industry crisis manager who solves all kinds of life and death problems in the oil industry world of Texas. Larter plays his wild-hearted ex-wife.
“In my life, I live in denim and white shirts, and this woman is bright orange, fiery colors, and neon yellow,” Larter told Vanity Fair of her character. “She’s dripping in Versace and diamonds.”
