The A-list Hollywood stars Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have been embroiled in a bitter divorce battle since 2016. Though they are still not officially divorced eight years later, Pitt would be free to marry his new girlfriend Ines de Ramon for one surprising reason.
Pitt Free To Marry Again
Pitt, 60, and Jolie, 49, were actually declared legally single back in 2019. This means that if Pitt wishes, he could marry his girlfriend de Ramon, 31. The couple went public with their relationship in November of 2022, and they are still going strong to this day.
As for Jolie, she appears to be single at this time.
“Being declared legally single in 2019 has the benefit of allowing them to somewhat move on with their lives and at least consider themselves both separate and not married,” divorce attorney Kara Chrobak explained to Fox News.
This Move Isn’t Uncommon
The certified financial planner Shinobu Hindert agreed, adding that a former couple choosing to become legally single while their divorce drags on is not uncommon.
“Becoming legally single grants immediate personal independence, freeing individuals from the legal constraints of marriage,” Hindert said. “This allows them to start new relationships or remarry without the complications of still being technically married.”
“It can also be a strategic move, separating personal status from complex asset divisions or custody battles, so each aspect can be addressed independently,” Hindert continued.
The California divorce attorney Christopher C. Melcher explained why many former couples opt to go this route during a divorce.
“A divorce proceeding can take years for all issues to be resolved,” Melcher said. “Some do not want to wait that long because they have met someone else and want to remarry, even while the case proceeds against their former partner.”
“The law allows for a termination of marital status before the other issues are resolved,” he added. “Otherwise, a spouse would be trapped in the marriage for years after they split until every last issue was resolved.”

Pitt And de Ramon Taking Things Slow
Just because Pitt and de Ramon can get married, however, doesn’t mean they will anytime soon. Sources told US Weekly last week that they are enjoying their time together and not rushing their relationship.
“Brad and Ines both feel like they’ve met their soulmate,” one source said. Another insider added that Pitt and de Ramon are not currently rushing into an engagement.
De Ramon is a jewelry designer who was previously married to the Vampire Diaries actor Paul Wesley, 42. They married in 2022, and their divorce was finalized in February of 2024.
Pitt is reportedly smitten with de Ramon in a big way.
“Brad loves so many things about her. She’s great for him,” a source told People Magazine earlier this month.

Pitt And Jolie’s Bitter Divorce
Pitt and Jolie have had one of the nastiest divorce battles to ever hit Hollywood. Since 2016, they’ve been fighting over custody of their six children: Maddox, 22, Pax, 20, Zahara, 19, Shiloh, 18, and twins Knox and Vivienne, 16. They’ve also been duking it out over a winery that they own together in France.
It’s safe to say that this divorce has been going on for long enough. While it’s nice that Pitt and Jolie can each legally move on with other people, we can only hope they’re able to finalize their own divorce as soon as possible.
