Women in Hollywood are under an incredible amount of pressure to maintain their youthful looks, which leads many of them to seek out drastic plastic surgeries as they get older. That’s why it’s so refreshing that the 65 year-old actress Andie MacDowell is speaking out to say that she is embracing both her wrinkles and her gray hair, as she “doesn’t feel less sexy” with age.

‘I Love Being An Older Woman’

“There is this time period between 40 and 60 that I think women in the business can struggle because they don’t know what to do,” MacDowell told People Magazine. “They’ve been seen as one way, but they’re not really seen as what I am now.”

“I was struggling and I’m much more comfortable with where I am right now,” she admitted. “I love being an older woman. I really enjoy it. And it doesn’t feel less sexy.”

MacDowell went on to say that while it was initially “hard to navigate” the change of aging, she eventually “accepted it.”

“I feel like my career is actually doing really well right now because I’ve dove into being an older woman and accepted it,” she continued, going on to say that she’s enjoyed some “complex older woman” roles in recent years.

Difference Between How Hollywood Treats Men And Women

MacDowell also addressed the differences in how Hollywood treats men as they age.

“Men are seen as really sexy when they start to get wrinkles,” she explained. “I like all the terms we use for older men. I want to hold onto those terms. I want to be debonair. Why not? What a beautiful term.”

Unfortunately, women don’t have this same courtesy, but MacDowell wants to change that.

“We’ve been brainwashed, and it’s a psychological thing that we’ve bought into because we’ve been fed it for so long,” she added. “We don’t allow ourselves to feel good about ourselves and we even perceive [older men] as sexy, because we’ve been taught this.”

MacDowell Excited About Getting Older

Earlier this year, MacDowell revealed that she’s gotten to a place in which she’s actually excited about the aging process.

“I want to be old. I’m tired of trying to be young. I don’t want to be young. I’ve been young. And to be an older person trying to be young, what an effort. That’s a lot of effort,” MacDowell told Katie Couric back in March, according to The New York Post.

“I do think there is the importance of seeing beauty at every age and it’s not limited to a certain age,” the Four Weddings And A Funeral star continued. “Every once in a while, I’ll say to someone, ‘I’m old,’ and they’ll say, ‘No, you’re not!’

“Like it’s some horrible thing to say … And I’ll say to them, ‘But what if I say I’m young? Don’t have a problem with that, do you?’” she added. “The truth of the matter is, I’m old and that’s OK. That’s what I really want people to think about.”

MacDowell’s Message To Other Women

MacDowell went on to say that women in their 60s like herself should be loving this period in their lives.

“Why is there so much shame attached to getting older?” she said. “We’re towards the end. We have no time to waste feeling shame.”

MacDowell then revealed why she allowed her formerly brunette hair to naturally go gray.

“It looks good on me,” she said. “As it was growing out, my eyes popped. The color of them looked a little different. I liked the way my skin looked better. And there was a feeling. It empowered me more.”

Hollywood’s obsession with staying youthful has gone way too far, so we applaud MacDowell for having the guts to age naturally. Here’s hoping that more actresses will join her in letting other women know that getting older is a blessing!
