Glen Powell is one of the biggest stars in Hollywood right now. That’s why it may come as a surprise that he’s claiming that he nearly went broke waiting for the 2022 release of his hit movie Top Gun: Maverick.

Powell Nearly Went Broke

“I’d never made any significant amount of money on a movie, including Top Gun, and I was depleting a bank account to a point where my accountant was like, ‘This pandemic cannot last much longer,’” Powell, 35, told The Hollywood Reporter.

Page Six reported that Top Gun: Maverick had originally been set to be released in 2019. However, it had to be delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While there were various opportunities to release the movie on a streaming service, its star Tom Cruise refused, as he was determined for fans to see it in theaters.

This was unfortunate for Powell, as he desperately needed money at the time.

“Tom was already Tom; I was waiting for my life to change,” he explained.

The film finally came out in May of 2022. It ultimately became the second-highest grossing film of that year, making $1.5 billion worldwide. It made Powell a household name, and he’s been working nonstop ever since.

Powell Talks Other Potential Film Roles

In another interview this week, Powell revealed that he narrowly missed out on a role in the Christopher Nolan movie Oppenheimer, which won the Best Picture Oscar earlier this year.

Powell told GQ that he missed out on the role of Nobel-winning nuclear physicist Ernest Lawrence. The part eventually went to the actor Josh Hartnett. Despite this, Powell says he is still in touch with Nolan and is confident they’ll work together in the future.

Powell also opened up about turning down a role in the next Jurassic World movie. Had he accepted it, he would have been starring alongside Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, and Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, according to Yahoo News.

Powell had dreamed of starring in a Jurassic Park movie since he was a child. However, he didn’t see a place for himself in this particular film.

“I’m not doing that movie because I read the script and I immediately was like, my presence in this movie doesn’t help it,” Powell said. “And the script’s great. The movie’s going to f**king kill. It’s not about that.”

“It’s about choosing where you’re going to make an audience happy and where you’re going to make yourself happy,” he added.
