The singer Cher is speaking out this week to reveal why she allegedly turned down a date with the legendary Elvis Presley decades ago.

But first, watch Cher reference address rumors that she was dating Elvis back in 1975.

Cher Turned Down Elvis

While appearing on “The Jennifer Hudson Show,” Cher, 77, opened up about why she turned Elvis down.

“It was because I just was — I was nervous and I knew of the people around him, and it wasn’t that they were bad people, it’s just that I was kind of nervous of his reputation,” she explained.

“I’m really shy when I’m not working and kind of shy around men,” Cher continued. “And the reason I go out with young men is because men my age or older — well, now they’re all dead — but before they just never, they were always terrified to approach me and younger men were the only ones that [did].”

Cher is currently dating the music executive Alexander “A.E.” Edwards, who is 40 years her junior, according to Fox News. She is set to turn 78 later this month on May 20.

Cher Was Always An Elvis Fan

This comes one year after Cher revealed on “The Kelly Clarkson Show” that she’d been a fan of Elvis since she was a little girl.

“When I was 10 years old, my mom took me to the Pan Pacific to see Elvis,” Cher said. “I just — I really loved him,” she said. “And then when I got older — not this old — but older, he invited me to Las Vegas.”

“One of his people called and said ‘Would you like to come up for the weekend?’ And I was so terrified that I couldn’t do it,” she added.

In defending her decision to reject Elvis, Cher claimed that he was not at his best at the time.

“He was on the downside of himself… And I don’t mean like handsome… He was on the downside of the drugs and stuff like that,” she explained.

“You don’t want to get involved with another musician who does drugs,” Cher concluded. “I did that.”

This was seemingly a reference to one of her many former lovers in the music industry.

Elvis is sadly known to have had serious substance abuse issues. He died in 1977 at the age of 42 from cardiac arrest, but it’s believed that the many prescription drugs in his system contributed to his untimely passing.

Cher’s Relationship History

Cher was previously married to two musicians, first to Sonny Bono from 1964 until they divorced in 1975 and then to Gregg Allman of the Allman Brothers band from 1975 until they divorced in 1979. In a 2018 interview, Cher blamed drugs for her second divorce.

“It was really intense, but it’s hard to have a marriage with someone who’s doing drugs,” she told Daily Mail of Allman. “Drugs and I were just never meant to be together. I thought it was stupid and still do. I saw too many people where it ruined their lives. It ruined Gregory’s life.”

Cher and Elvis are two singers that most people would not associate with one another, so it comes as somewhat of a surprise that they nearly dated. In the end, this serves as a reminder that the entertainment industry really is a small world!
