Beyoncé Makes History, Scoring Number One Country Album

Beyoncé is making history with her latest album release, the country music-inspired Cowboy Carter.

The album hit number one on the Billboard Top Country Album chart and the Billboard 200 for music overall this past weekend.

It is her eighth number-one album.

Cowboy Carter replaced Morgan Wallen’s One Thing At a Time at the top of the country chart. It’s all the more impressive considering her career has been notable for R&B and soul.

Beyoncé Topping The Country Charts

Beyoncé’s country album had already seen success before its debut with the release of dual lead singles, “Texas Hold ‘Em” and “16 Carriages”.

She celebrated that achievement.

“I feel honored to be the first black woman with the number one single on the Hot Country Songs chart,” she said.

“Texas Hold ‘Em” still sits atop the Hot Country Songs chart but is now joined by “II Most Wanted”, a song featuring pop artist Miley Cyrus at number two, and “Jolene”, a cover of Dolly Parton’s hit song at number three.

In all, 8 of the 10 ‘hottest‘ country songs come from the Cowboy Carter album.

Other Artists Who Found Success Switching Genres To Country

Despite the historic run, Beyoncé isn’t the first artist to switch to the country genre and find significant success. Though she will likely wind up being the top overall artist to do so.

Darius Rucker successfully transitioned from rock to country music. The former frontman for Hootie & the Blowfish has had four No. 1 albums on the Billboard Country chart.

Rucker received a Grammy Award in 2013 for Best Country Solo Performance with his cover of Old Crow Medicine Show’s “Wagon Wheel.”

Lionel Richie also made a successful move as a soul and R&B legend into country music. “Lady”, one of country star Kenny Rogers’ biggest career hits, landed at No. 1 across multiple genres, including Billboard‘s Hot Country Songs chart.

It was written and produced by Richie.

Rapper Lil Nas X also found success with a rap-country combination song, “Old Town Road.”

The tune became the longest-running number-one song (at 19 weeks) since the U.S. Billboard Hot 100’s 1958 inception.

Will Beyoncé break that record? Stay tuned.
