‘Gone With The Wind’ Hit With Trigger Warnings By Publisher – Warnings Of ‘Racist’ And ‘Hurtful’ Depictions

The latest edition of the classic 1936 novel “Gone With The Wind” has been given a trigger warning by its publisher, saying that it contains “racist” depictions and content that readers may find to be “hurtful.”

Trigger Warning Added To ‘Gone With The Wind’

Fox News reported that Pan Macmillan, the publisher “Gone With The Wind,” has added a lengthy warning to the book, which was written by Margaret Mitchell.

“‘Gone with the Wind’ is a novel which includes problematic elements including the romanticization of a shocking era in our history and the horrors of slavery,” the warning read. “The novel includes the representation of unacceptable practices, racist and stereotypical depictions and troubling themes, characterization, language and imagery.”

“The text of this book remains true to the original in every way and is reflective of the language and period in which it was originally written,” the warning continued. “We want to alert readers that there may be hurtful or indeed harmful phrases and terminology that were prevalent at the time this novel was written and which are true to the context of the historical setting of this novel.”

Publisher Doubles Down – Adds New Forward As Well

“Pan Macmillan believes changing the text to reflect today’s world would undermine the authenticity of the original, so has chosen to leave the text in its entirety,” the warning concluded. “This does not, however, constitute an endorsement of the characterization, content or language used.”

The New York Post reported that Pan Macmillan has also brought on the historical fiction writer Philippa Gregory to write a new forward for “Gone With The Wind” that addresses the book’s “white supremacist” elements.

In this forward, Gregory wrote that the novel “tells us, unequivocally, that African people are not of the same species as white people. This is the lie that spoils the novel.”

Gone With The Wind Movie Targeted As Well

“Gone With The Wind” tells the story of a plantation owner’s daughter who struggles to keep her family’s property in the South throughout the chaos of the Civil War. It was adapted into the classic Oscar-winning 1939 film that stars Vivian Leigh and Clark Gable, and sadly, this movie has also been targeted by the woke left in recent years for its depiction of slavery.

After the death of George Floyd in 2020, HBO Max pulled Gone With The Wind from its streaming platform, with WarnerMedia chief Bob Greenblatt saying at the time that the movie would return once a disclaimer had been added to it. 

A spokesperson for HBO Max added that the movie is a “product of its time and depicts some of the ethnic and racial prejudices that have, unfortunately, been commonplace in American society. These racist depictions were wrong then and are wrong today, and we felt that to keep this title up without an explanation and a denouncement of those depictions would be irresponsible.”

This is just the latest in a long line of instances of the woke left trying to erase or censor aspects of American history that they find to be offensive. “Gone With The Wind” is one of the best novels that was ever written, and people should be able to enjoy reading it without having to also deal with ridiculously woke trigger warnings.
