Jane Fonda Shoots Down Outrage Over Her ‘Murder’ Quip About Abortion Protesters On ‘The View’

The Hollywood star Jane Fonda is doubling down after suggesting on Friday that “murder” would be the way to deal with people who disagree with abortion being legal during an appearance on “The View.”

Fonda Stands By Her Words

“While women’s reproductive rights are a very serious issue and extremely important to me, my comment on The View was obviously made in jest,” Fonda, 85, told Newsweek. “My body language and tone made it clear to those in the room—and to anyone watching—that I was using hyperbole to make a point.”

Fonda went on to say that women are “‘not going back” to losing control of their bodies, even after Roe v. Wade was overturned.

“Women across the country are facing real threats when it comes to our bodies, and people lose faith in our mission to protect women when others choose to focus on tangential issues and passing jokes instead of the actual problem at hand,” she said.

Fonda’s ‘Murder’ Comments

Fonda made her controversial comments while appearing on “The View” with her “Grace & Frankie” co-star Lily Tomlin. When asked by Joy Behar about how to handle those who agree that abortion should be illegal, Fonda replied, “Well, I’ve thought of murder.”

When asked by Tomlin to repeat what she’d just said, Fonda replied, “Murder.”

“She’s just kidding,” Behar said, adding that the media would “just run with it” if the actress didn’t backtrack. Fonda, however, appeared to have no regrets about what she’d just said.

Daily Mail reported that social media immediately erupted in the wake of Fonda’s comments.

“Isn’t this a threat of violence? She’s pro murder. Something should be done immediately,” one social media user wrote, with another adding, “That’s a threat she needs investigated.”

“It’s sad when people call for the death of others,” a third user added. “I don’t agree with this, as I don’t believe in the call to eradicate transgenders. We need to stop ALL of this hateful rhetoric, not just on your own side.”

Marjorie Taylor Greene Rips Fonda

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) also took to social media to call out Fonda.

“I routinely get death threats because of the nasty women on ‘The View’ and the things they say about me,” Greene said, according to The New York Post. “But calling for us to be assassinated makes ‘The View,’ the hosts, the producers, the network, the advertisers, and everyone involved responsible for death threats, attacks, and potential murders of Pro-Life politicians and activists. I am reporting this.”

“By the way @Janefonda your eggs are dried up so you don’t have to worry about getting pregnant anytime soon, so you can retire from demanding baby murder now,” she added, going on to call on the FBI and the Justice Department to get involved.

“The @FBI and @TheJusticeDept have targeted Pro-Life protestors for praying outside of abortion clinics,” Greene wrote. “They better step up and hold @Janefonda and @TheView accountable for calling for the murder of Pro-Life Politicians like me. I will not be voting to fund the FBI and DOJ unless the two-tiered justice system is stopped.”

Fonda has been making controversial political statements for decades, but it seems that she really did go too far this time. It remains to be seen if she will be met with any tangible punishment for her latest incendiary words.

James Conrad

James Conrad’s passion for politics is only overshadowed by his longstanding interest in Hollywood. His unique perspective as a gay conservative fuels him to challenge celebrity views and those who think they have a right to tell anyone how to think or vote. James proudly wields his minority point of view to combat identity politics and cut through his typecast. Fun fact: James’ guilty pleasure is the British royal family.
