Goldie Hawn & Kurt Russell Question Why People Care That They Aren’t Married After 40 Years Together

The Hollywood stars Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell have been together since 1983, yet the couple has never gotten married. They both opened up about this in a new interview, revealing that they are “constantly” asked why they haven’t tied the knot. 

Russell And Hawn On Not Marrying

“We constantly got asked, ‘When are you going to get married? Why aren’t you married?'” Russell said, referring to their early years as a couple in the 1980s. “And we were like, ‘Why does anybody care about that?’ We’d asked our kids if they cared about it. They didn’t. We didn’t.”

Hawn believes that not getting married is part of why they have stayed together for so long. 

“We have done just perfectly without marrying,” she said, according to Fox News. “I already feel devoted and isn’t that what marriage is supposed to do? So as long as my emotional state is in a state of devotion, honesty, caring, and loving, then we’re fine.” 

“We have raised our children brilliantly; they are beautiful people,” Hawn added. “We did a great job there, and we didn’t have to get married to do that. I like waking up every day and seeing that he is there and knowing that I have a choice. There is really no reason to marry.”

Russell And Hawn Have No Interest In Marrying

Both Russell and Hawn have been married and divorced in the past, and neither one of them seem to have any interest in walking down the aisle again. 

“For people like us, the marriage certificate wasn’t going to create anything that otherwise we wouldn’t have,” Russell said. “I don’t know — 40 years isn’t enough to finally say, ‘Well I guess…’”

Hawn is mother to Oliver and Kate Hudson from her previous marriage, and she shares a son named Wyatt with Russell. 

“Our children got married… Oliver’s very happily married and Wyatt’s very happily married,” Hawn stated. “Katie got married once and that didn’t work, and she’s with this most amazing human and I don’t know if she’ll marry again. The point is that we all tried marriage and sometimes marriage doesn’t work.

“It’s not about the marriage. It’s about the people and the relationship, and the will to stay together,” she continued. “And that’s a big one because if you want it, you can have it. You’ve got to give things up, but the joy and the excitement of being together and touching the toes of somebody at night is really a nice feeling.”

Hawn And Russell Stay Out Of Politics

Unlike many Hollywood stars, Hawn and Russell have made a point of staying out of politics. 

“I’ve always been someone who felt we are court jesters. That’s what we do,” Russell told The New York Times in 2020.  “As far as I’m concerned, you should step away from saying anything so that you can still be seen by the audience in any character.”

“There’s no reason entertainers can’t learn just as much as anybody else about a subject, whatever it is,” he added, before admitting, “But I think that what’s sad about it is that they lose their status as a court jester. And I’m a court jester. That’s what I was born to do.”

While it’s surprising that they’ve never married, Hawn and Russell are two of the most down to earth celebrities that are working in Hollywood today. We can only hope that they have many years of happiness together to come!
