Valerie Bertinelli Complains About Being ‘Mercilessly Mocked’ For Being Overweight

The Hollywood star Valerie Bertinelli of “One Day At A Time” fame is opening up about what it was like to be “mercilessly mocked” for her weight.

Bertinelli Sounds Off

Bertinelli, 62, took to her Instagram Story to open up to her followers while she was on a walk. 

“I’m giggling because I had a small hidden bruise that was activated today,” she said, according to Fox News. 

“You can probably hear them ‘cause my pants are rubbing together and it makes this particular sound,” she added, referring to a faint sound that could be heard. “It’s these particular pants. And I stopped wearing them because I was told, I was mercilessly mocked, you know, ‘I’m too lazy to do anything about it, they wouldn’t rub together if you ….’ Anyway, it doesn’t matter now because it’s in the past.”

‘I’m So Grateful’

“Hidden bruises are something that emotional, verbal, mental abuse do to you that people can’t see. But we kind of deal with, every day, when they’re activated,” she continued. “I’m so grateful that the work that I’m doing on healing is working. So it’s making me giggle now. I put these pants away forever, I even changed the way I walked in them. So now, I can wear them, hear that sound, and that’s the sound of freedom, to me.”

Though Bertinelli didn’t name the specific person who “mercilessly mocked” her weight, she’s been open about her bitter divorce from Tom Vitale, which was finally finalized back in November after one year. 

In her latest video, Bertinelli admitted that she was nervous to share this story because she feared her followers might say, “Oh my god, let go of it. Move on.” 

“This is called moving on. This is called healing,” she said in response. “And to all of you that can identify with this and feel seen: welcome. I’m just another part of your tribe.”

Bertinelli Opens Up About Divorce

Bertinelli has long been open about how tough her latest divorce was for her.

“I am gonna be more than happy to be happily divorced and spend the rest of my life alone,” she told TODAY in June of last year. “I’ll be happy that way. Well, with my six cats and my dog and my son, and hopefully one day grandchildren.”

Bertinelli went on to say that the divorce was so hard for her that she is no longer open to finding love again with someone else. 

“Oh God, no,” she said when asked if she will be looking for love again in the future. “Because of the challenges that I’m going through right now, because divorce sucks. I can’t imagine ever trusting anyone again to let into my life. So I have some trust issues that I’m sure I’m going to have to get past. Divorce sucks.”
