Tom Selleck Reunites With Former ‘Magnum P.I.’ Co-Star Larry Manetti On The Set Of ‘Blue Bloods’

Fans of the iconic 1980s television show “Magnum P.I.” will be ecstatic to learn that stars Tom Selleck and Larry Manetti reunited on the set of “Blue Bloods” this week!

Selleck And Manetti Reunite

Entertainment Tonight reported that Selleck and Manetti stared together on “Magnum P.I.” from 1980 until 1988, with the former playing the title character and the latter playing Orville “Rick” Wright. Manetti, 75, will reportedly be guest starring on “Blue Bloods” this week in an episode in which “a retired cop holds a young man at gunpoint who sold his grandson fentanyl laced pills.”

Their reunion was announced by the “Blue Bloods” star Donnie Wahlberg, who posted a photo of them together on set.

“#MagnumMonday! It’s a mini Magnum PI reunion, on the set of #BlueBloods this week, with guest star Larry Manetti & Tom Selleck — together again,” Wahlberg wrote. 

Wahlberg went on to pay tribute to the late “Magnum P.I.” stars Roger E. Mosley and John Hillerman, who died in 2022 and 2017 respectively. 

“Wishing the late greats Roger E Mosley & John Hillerman could be here, too,” he concluded.

Selleck’s History With ‘Magnum P.I.’

“Magnum P.I.” was a massive success during its eight year run, and while it could have gone on longer, Selleck ultimately decided to leave the show to live a quieter life on his ranch with his family. 

“I knew intellectually what it would mean in terms of being a public person, but until you’ve lived it, there’s no way to understand it,” he told People Magazine in 2020. “I had a feeling of, ‘I don’t think I’m cut out for this.'”

“I quit ‘Magnum,’ not because I didn’t like it or I was tired of it. I was tired from it. And I wanted a three-dimensional life because I didn’t have one,” he added. 

Selleck, 78, has been married to his wife Jillie Mack for 36 years, and they share one 34 year-old daughter together. He is also the father of a 57 year-old son from a previous marriage. 

“I’m a fairly private person,” he explained. “And I’ve always treasured the balance between work and time with my family. It’s always about them.”

Selleck Returns To Acting

Selleck later returned to acting and has been on “Blue Bloods” since 2010, and he’s said in the past that he does not think “there is an endpoint” for the CBS drama. 

“I think there is a lot of life in the show, as long as you let your characters grow and get older,” he said in 2020.

“There is an evolution,” he continued. “It started out as a character-driven show, and it’s even more than that now. When you get to a point like this, and we certainly had it on [‘Magnum P.I.’], the audience is really inside the main characters’ heads.”

As for Manetti, he’s also continued acting in the decades since “Magnum P.I.” went off the air. Most notably, he took the new role of Nicky “The Kid” Demarco on the reboots of “Hawaii Five-0” and “Magnum P.I.” between 2013 and 2019.
