Whoopi Goldberg Fires Back Hours After Her Movie ‘Till’ Is Snubbed By The Oscars

“Before we start off, we just want to celebrate the talented artists and filmmakers who were nominated for Oscars this morning,” Goldberg, 67, said as she kicked off Tuesday’s show, according to Entertainment Weekly. 

“Unfortunately, my film, Till, was not nominated, but we do want to congratulate all the nominees, because many of them have been here and it’s wonderful to say congrats, so that’s what we’ll do,” she added.

The movie Till itself was not expected to be nominated for awards like Best Picture or Best Director at the Oscars, nor was Goldberg’s performance expected to be heralded, as the film had come up short in these categories for much of this awards season.

Danielle Deadwyler, who is the star of the movie and plays the mother of Emmett Till, was projected to get a Best Actress Oscar nomination because she had scored similar nominations from the Screen Actors Guild Awards, the Critics Choice Awards, and the BAFTA Awards. Alas, however, she was not one of the five nominees that were announced yesterday morning, so Goldberg’s movie walks away with zero Oscar nominations.

‘Fat Suit’ Controversy

After appearing in the movie as Till’s grandmother Alma Carthan, Goldberg had an embarrassingly public scandal when she fired back at a critic who had slammed her for wearing a “distracting fat suit” in the movie. Goldberg responded by saying that she had not worn any prosthetics for the film, so the “fat suit” was just her real body.

“There was a young lady who writes for one of the magazines, and she was distracted by my fat suit in her review,” Goldberg said on “The View” at the time.

“I don’t really care how you felt about the movie, but you should know that was not a fat suit, that was me…. I assume you don’t watch the show, or you would know that was not a fat suit,” she continued.

Goldberg’s Holocaust Comments

It was also while promoting Till at the end of last month that Goldberg doubled down on her infamous comments that the Holocaust was not about race.

“My best friend said, ‘Not for nothing is there no box on the census for the Jewish race.’ So that leads me to believe that we’re probably not a race,” Goldberg told The Times of London back in December.

“It wasn’t originally” about race, she continued, according to NBC News. “Remember who they were killing first. They were not killing racial; they were killing physical. They were killing people they considered to be mentally defective. And then they made this decision.” 

These comments have resulted in calls for Goldberg to be fired from “The View” to grow over the last few weeks.

Between the Oscars snub and the embarrassingly messy press tour for the movie, Till might be a project that Goldberg would like to forget as soon as possible. She would have come out looking better if she’d not mentioned the Oscars snub at all on “The View,” but then again, taking the high road has never been Goldberg’s strong suit.
