Valerie Bertinelli Celebrates First New Year’s Day Since Bitter Divorce – ‘I’m Free’

The year of 2022 was a tough one for Valerie Bertinelli, as it saw the former “One Day At A Time” star undergo a bitter divorce from her ex-husband Tom Vitale. That’s why Bertinelli was more than ready to put 2022 behind her, and she showed that to the world in a touching video that she posted to her social media accounts.

‘I’m Free’

The video shows a visibly relieved Bertinelli, 62, twirling around by the ocean with a huge smile on her face as the Taylor Swift song “Clean” plays in the background.

“This new year day is coming in so much happier than last year’s,” she captioned the video. “From a young age, New Year’s Day has been one of my absolute favorite days, for the last 5-6 years it’s been one of the saddest. No more.”

“There is so much to look forward to now, when before it just looked endlessly sad, scary, lonely and stressful,” she added. “I have no idea what’s ahead for me and I’m not worried. I’m free. This new years day, 2023, is the first day of the rest of my life! I wish all of you every bit of joy and happiness and kindness that you claim. It’s all yours. Grab it!”

People Magazine reported that Bertinelli and Vitale filed for divorce in November of 2021 after ten years of marriage, and a bitter divorce battle quickly ensued. In November of 2022, Bertinelli took to Twitter to celebrate the “second best day of my life” after she learned that she was officially divorced from Vitale.

“My lawyer just called. The papers are all signed. They’re about to be filed,” she said in this video. “On 11/22/22, I am officially f—— divorced. Happily divorced. God. Finally. It’s finally over. YES!”

Bertinelli Devastated Over Divorce

Bertinelli has long been open about how difficult her divorce from Vitale had been on her.

“I am gonna be more than happy to be happily divorced and spend the rest of my life alone,” she told TODAY back in June. “I’ll be happy that way. Well, with my six cats and my dog and my son, and hopefully one day grandchildren.”

Bertinelli went on to say that the divorce was so hard for her that she is no longer open to finding love again with someone else.

“Oh God, no,” she said when asked if she would be open to looking for love again. “Because of the challenges that I’m going through right now, because divorce sucks. I can’t imagine ever trusting anyone again to let into my life. So I have some trust issues that I’m sure I’m going to have to get past. Divorce sucks.”

Bertinelli’s Previous Marriage

Bertinelli was previously married to the rocker Eddie Van Halen from 1981 until they divorced in 2007. Unlike her divorce from Vitale, however, her divorce from Van Halen does not appear to have been bitter, as they remained friends in the years afterwards. In fact, they stayed so close that Bertinelli was by his side when he died in 2020.

We’re so happy for Bertinelli that she is able to start 2023 with a clean slate. She can finally put this divorce behind her and move on with her life!
