Rey Mysterio Injured, WWE Going With Brock Lesnar – Gunther?

Rey Mysterio was set for the Royal Rumble, but he is apparently injured. Also, are we getting Brock Lesnar and Gunter at WrestleMania 39?

Rey Mysterio Injured

Typically, the Royal Rumble match features 30 superstars. Although, the men’s version last night was down a member.

Rey Mysterio’s music played, but he never came out. About 90 seconds later and his son, Dominik Mysterio, made his entrance.

In hand, was his father’s mask. WWE never showed any backstage angle, with the announce team concluding The Judgement Day got involved.

Well, it sounds like that was a last minute decision. On the Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer stated Rey was injured during his SmackDown encounter with Karrion Kross.

“Rey Mysterio was injured last night during the Loredo Smackdown tapings against Karrion Kross,” said Meltzer. “He was going to be in the Rumble, but that spot was changed.”

“What happened was they did a spot where he’s supposed to come out, but didn’t come out, and then Dominik comes out. I think they were supposed to do some teases with them at in the Rumble to set up their WrestleMania match.”

“Obviously they couldn’t do that because Rey was injured. And Dominik, I guess, came out with Rey’s mask, with the idea that somehow Judgment Day beat up Rey backstage and Dominik had the mask and that’s the way they’re going to do the angle.”

“Hopefully Rey’s injury isn’t serious. But, I guess it was serious enough that he couldn’t do what was planned in the match.”

For a long time, Rey has hinted at retirement. Some were under the belief he would call it a career at WrestleMania 39.

The idea would be Dominik beats Rey and then start the next chapter in his career. If the injury will cause Rey to miss a lengthy time away, that could alter a major WrestleMania 39 bout.

Speaking of the Royal Rumble, Brock Lesnar tossed out several wrestlers before being eliminated by Bobby Lashley.

Before that took place, Lesnar and Gunther had a moment inside the ring. When the two went eye to eye, it got fans excited.

As for WrestleMania, the idea remains for Lesnar and Lashley to meet in a trilogy.

Now, WWE could book a match at the Elimination Chamber to allow Lesnar to wrestle twice. Although, it seems like Lesnar and Lashley at WrestleMania is all Lesnar will do.

Still, WWE has something special with Gunther. He entered number one in the Royal Rumble and was the last person eliminated.

As a result, Gunther broke the record for longest time in that match. We may not get that match now, but certainly down the road.
