The Hollywood star Kevin Costner won the Golden Globe for best actor in a drama series last night for his work on the popular show “Yellowstone,” but he was not at the ceremony to accept the award for one sad reason.

‘I’m So Sorry’

Hours before the ceremony, Costner took to Twitter to post a video in which he revealed that he would not be able to attend the Golden Globes because of the massive flooding caused by rainstorms in California, according to Fox News

“Hi everyone. Look, I’m so sorry for everyone who might have been tuning in to watch the Golden Globes — Chris and I aren’t going to be there,” the 67 year-old star said.

“Yesterday we had to pull the kids out of school in Santa Barbara,” Costner continued. “This is the second time in five years that the freeway has flooded out, we found ourselves on the wrong side of the town and we couldn’t get back last night.”

‘Nobody’s Sadder Than Us’

“Nobody’s sadder than us that we can’t be there at the Golden Globes,” he added. “Chris had a beautiful dress, I was looking forward to walking down the red carpet with her.”

Costner was referring to his wife Christine Baumgartner, who he’s been married to for 19 years. He concluded his video by offering a heartfelt apology with his absence.

“I’m just so sorry that I can’t be there. I really wanted to, I know how bad Chris wanted to support me,” he said. “She went out and bought me some gold and yellow and black and silver balloons so we’re going to sit at the television and see what happens.”

“Thank you for your support,” Costner concluded. “I’m really sorry to the Golden Globes and the international press and I hope we’re invited back. Thanks.”

Costner Mocked As He Wins Golden Globe

Hours later, Costner was named as the winner in his category, and his award was accepted by the actress Regina Hall, who had some fun at his expense.

“Kevin Costner, he so much wanted,” she said as she read the prompter before she cracked up with laughter. “I always like how they write this, like he so much wanted to be – no, I”m sure he did.”

“But because of the unprecedented weather and flooding, he has to shelter in place in Santa Barbara – Jesus…No this is a sad story right now….He’s stuck in Santa Barbara, let’s pray everyone,” she added sarcastically. “No that’s awful.”

“No, no, no, this is true. This is true. We pray and we hope everyone affected by these storms remain safe,” she concluded. “I’m gonna set that award right there, on your behalf, Kevin.”

Though “Yellowstone” has been on television since 2018, Costner’s nomination was the show’s first Golden Globe nod in its’ entire five year run. When he won in his category, he managed to beat out Jeff Bridges (“The Old Man”), Diego Luna (“Andor”), Bob Odenkirk (“Better Call Saul”) and Adam Scott (“Severance”).

While it’s sad that Costner could not accept this award personally, it’s nice to see “Yellowstone” finally get some awards recognition. Perhaps Hollywood is finally starting to realize that they need to start rewarding the shows that Americans are actually watching!
