Earlier this week, we reported that the former “Tonight Show” host Jay Leno was forced to cancel an appearance last weekend after suffering burns in a gasoline fire. Now, disturbing new details have come to light about his injuries.

New Details About Leno’s Gasoline Fire

A source told NBC News that Leno, 72, suffered third degree burns to his face that are so serious that he may need skin grafts. The fire reportedly occurred in Leno’s garage at his home in Burbank, California on Saturday, when he was fixing a clogged fuel line on a vintage car. When the fuel started leaking, gasoline sprayed on Leno’s face before the fire was started by a spark.

The insider, who saw Leno the day after the fire, said that the comedian was burned on the left side of his face and his hands. The Burbank Fire Department has confirmed that they were called to Leno’s home at around 12:30PM on Saturday.

Leno Receiving Treatment

Leno was rushed to Grossman Burn Center in Los Angeles, where he remains at the time of this writing. There, Leno is being given a hyperbaric treatment, an oxygen therapy that “can accelerate burn wound healing,” according to the Grossman Burn Center’s website.

“Jay is just going through the normal procedures. They put him into the hyperbaric. It’s just a matter of time,” said the insider, adding that the hyperbaric treatment is “something he has to do all the time.”

“I don’t think he will be performing for at least two weeks,” the source continued. “We’re canceling pretty much all events for him.”

Though doctors have said that Leno may need to stay at the burn center for quite some time, the insider is hoping that he will be able to go home by Thanksgiving next week.

“Jay is the kind of guy that is that likes to get up and go but they need to treat him,” the insider concluded. “In other words, some people that have burns in the body, they can’t move. But Jay physically, below his chin or below his shoulders, he’s fine. I don’t think he’ll want to be laying there for that long.”

Leno Breaks His Silence

Leno had been set to perform in St. Louis and Denver this weekend, but those appearances have been cancelled. Leno himself told People Magazine on Monday that he’d suffered a “serious medical emergency.”

“I got some serious burns from a gasoline fire,” he added “I am ok. Just need a week or two to get back on my feet.”

Aimee Bennett, a spokesperson at the Grossman Burn Center, confirmed that Leno is being treated at the facility.

“Jay wants everyone to know that he is in stable condition and receiving treatment … for burns that he received to his face and hands from a gasoline accident in his garage over the weekend,” Bennett said. “He is in good humor and is touched by all the inquiries into his condition and well wishes. [He] wants to let everyone know he is doing well and is in ‘the best burn center in the United States.'”

It seems that the road to recovery may be a long one for Leno. Please join us in saying a prayer for him during this difficult time.
