Rosie O’Donnell Slams Ellen DeGeneres For Hurting Her Feelings During 2004 Interview – ‘I Never Really Got Over It’

Rosie O’Donnell and Ellen DeGeneres are two of the most famous lesbian comedians in Hollywood, but some may be surprised to learn that there is no love lost between the two of them.

O’Donnell Talks DeGeneres

O’Donnell admitted that she and DeGeneres are not close during a recent appearance on Watch What Happens Live! People Magazine reported. The talk show host also said that DeGeneres hurt her feelings — during an interview with Larry King back in 2004 — in a way that she has never forgotten. It all started when O’Donnell told host Andy Cohen that she was never a guest on DeGeneres’ talk show during it’s entire twenty year run.

“Did they not ask [you to appear]?” Cohen asked, to which O’Donnell responded with a confident “No.”

“We had a little bit of a weird thing,” she disclosed, adding, “After my show went off the air and hers was coming on the air, Larry King was on with Ellen and he said ‘What ever happened to Rosie O’Donnell? Her show went down the tubes! She came out as a lesbian and disappeared!’ And Ellen said, and I’m quoting, ‘I don’t know Rosie. We’re not friends.'”

‘It Hurt My Feelings Like A Baby’

O’Donnell went on to describe the moment in which she watched the event as it was unfolding.

“I was in bed with [ex-wife] Kelli [Carpenter] and I said ‘Did I just hear that? Or was that a hallucination, auditory voice in my —'” she said. “And that’s what happened. And it hurt my feelings like a baby. And I never really got over it.”

O’Donnell did clarify that she was once asked to appear on an episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show when Cohen pointed out “they also never asked” her to be on the show but there was a caveat; she had to go alone.

“I was gonna go on for SMILF but I wanted to bring someone else with me so it was a little less awkward,” the former talk show host explained, later denouncing, “They didn’t want to do that.”

O’Donnell ended the segment by wishing DeGeneres well, saying, “I wish her all good things in her life and that she should be well.

DeGeneres Went On O’Donnell’s Show

People Magazine reported that DeGeneres came on “The Rosie O’Donnell Show,” which ran from 1996 until 2002, to talk about coming out as a lesbian in Hollywood. During this interview, DeGeneres joked to O’Donnell that her character on her sitcom “Ellen” was “Lebanese,” which allowed her to talk about it while keeping some of the show’s plot under wraps.

Both O’Donnell and DeGeneres used their respective platforms in Hollywood to come out as lesbians.

“When I came out, people warned me that it was going to ruin my career, and they were right for a while,” DeGeneres recently said as she celebrated the 25-year anniversary of her coming out episode. “Actually, for exactly three years, I lost my career. But look at me now.”

In May of this year, after 19 seasons, The Ellen DeGeneres Show came to an end. DeGeneres’ final years on the show were difficult, as they saw her be accused of presiding over a toxic workplace environment on set. O’Donnell’s latest comments on DeGeneres won’t do anything to help improve her reputation of how she reportedly acts behind the scenes, however.

James Conrad

James Conrad’s passion for politics is only overshadowed by his longstanding interest in Hollywood. His unique perspective as a gay conservative fuels him to challenge celebrity views and those who think they have a right to tell anyone how to think or vote. James proudly wields his minority point of view to combat identity politics and cut through his typecast. Fun fact: James’ guilty pleasure is the British royal family.
