Gilbert Melendez has been a long-time friend to Nate Diaz.
That is why Melendez has no issue defending his friend when it comes to verbal attacks by others.
The latest is from Khamzat Chimaev, as the rising UFC contender sounded off recently. Chimaev was set to meet Diaz, but missed weight and fought Kevin Holland instead.
“I think Khamzat was slightly intimidated and I think put too much pressure on himself,” Melendez said during a recent appearance on Submission Radio. “And James Krause did mention the weight cut. I know he mentioned that and made me look back at it, and that weight cut probably would really hurt Khamzat. And he knows that. And I think he broke a little mentally showing up eight pounds over.
“You know, knowing that if he’s in one of those championship rounds, you know, he may fade. So, I think Nate was ready for whatever. But to get back to it all, I think he was planning on taking him into deep waters and drowning him.”
