The legendary star Steve Martin has announced that he is likely retiring from the entertainment industry after a sixty-year career in Hollywood.

‘This Is, Weirdly, It’

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the 76-year-old Martin said that he is strongly considering retiring after he’s done on his current hit show “Only Murders in the Building.”

“There’s a time in your career when people are dying to see you…Now is the time in my career when I’m the one who’s got to show up,” he said.

However, Martin made sure to add that he will not be showing up after the end of “Only Murders in the Building,” which also stars Martin Short and Selena Gomez and was just renewed for a third season on Hulu.

“When this television show is done, I’m not going to seek others,” he said, according to Fox News. “I’m not going to seek other movies. I don’t want to do cameos. This is, weirdly, it.”

Martin’s History And Family Life

Martin has been working steadily since the 1960s, and he’s long been known as one of the funniest men in Hollywood. He’s beloved for his appearances on “Saturday Night Live,” and for his hit movies that include Planes, Trains & Automobiles, and Father Of The Bride

Daily Mail reported that Martin has been married to his wife Anna Stringfield since 2007, and they divide their time between New York City and Santa Barbara. These days, they’re in New York a lot, as that’s where their 9-year-old daughter goes to school.

“I have a family life that’s really fun,” said Martin. “To film a movie now, to go someplace else to live, I’m not willing to do that anymore. I can’t disappear for three months.”

Martin has made it clear in the past that he likes not living in Los Angeles and doesn’t pay much attention to what’s going on in the entertainment business.

“I’m happy not to know too much about the business,” he once said.

Martin Touring With Short

Martin and Short have been friends for decades, and they’ve been touring together since 2015, with more dates to come in the future.

“I think Steve learned the joy of collaboration,” Short said of Martin. “All through his stand-up life, he was by himself. Now, when he has success, he can celebrate with someone. And when something bombs, he can really laugh about it – as opposed to just being alone with it. ”

“After the show, he’s really happy,” Short added. “Steve gets a little anxious before a show, just because he so wants it to go well. He’s very modest in some ways, but he’s also aware of his position in show business — which, I guess, is as high as it gets … certainly in the realm of comedic influence.”

Martin Works Better With A Partner

Martin enjoys touring with Short as well, as he has found that he works better with others, rather than alone.

“The first time I hosted the Oscars [in 2001], I remembered standing there alone, behind the curtain, waiting for it to go up,” Martin recalled. “I couldn’t believe it. I was so tense. But when I did it with Alec Baldwin [in 2010], I wasn’t tense at all. Thinking about it later, it was having a partner that made me comfortable. That’s what made it fun.”

Martin has been making us laugh for decades, so he definitely deserves to retire in peace, if that’s what he chooses to do. However, we will certainly miss his onscreen antics, should he ultimately decide to do that!
