Fans of Dolly Parton will be happy to learn that a movie based on the country legend’s life is currently in the works. The film will be based on her long-teased Broadway show. The news has led to much speculation about who will win the role of the iconic “Jolene” singer.

Now, Parton herself is weighing in to reveal her thoughts on who she wants to play her.

“We were talking about doing my Broadway musical, and we were really, really far out ahead of that, and then the COVID hit and that changed my mind about a whole lot of things,” said Parton, 76, according to Pop Culture.

“I do intend someday to be on Broadway, but I’m thinking now that I might do my life story as a feature. Maybe possibly even a musical feature,” she added. “So we’re in talks about that.”

Parton’s Pick To Play Her

Parton went on to say that she already has some ideas as to who she wants to portray her on the big screen.

“I love Kristin Chenoweth. She’s just absolutely fantastic,” Parton revealed. “Years and years ago, when I was going to do the Broadway musical-I never can get it to how I want it, but I’m still working on it. But I thought she’d be an ideal person to do that.”

“But we’re all getting older now, so if we tell the parts…we may be able to have different Dollys,” she continued. “We’d probably have to have-as long as my career has been-like a little Dolly, and a middle Dolly, and then the older one. And she’d still be great for that.”

Chenoweth Responds

Chenoweth has admitted on Twitter that playing Parton would be her “dream role.”

Chenoweth has also collaborated with Parton in the past, performing a duet of her song “I Will Always Love You” on her 2019 album “For The Girls.”

“When I hear it, I get goosebumps, and I start to cry still,” Chenoweth told NPR. “I was raised on country music and gospel music. There’s something about Dolly that — well, for everybody; not just me — that I have connected with.”

“She was so very kind, and I thought if I ever got to sing with her, I’d want to sing that song, but I never thought she’d give it to me,” she added. “And she said ‘yes.’”

Another Potential Parton Actress

Speaking of Clarkson, rumors have swirled that the singer and talk show host will be given the role of Parton in her biopic. Clarkson was asked about this after she recently performed a medley tribute for Parton at the 57th Academy of Country Music Awards.

“I’m sure Dolly and I will have a lot to talk about when she’s on the show soon,” Clarkson said. “I love her so much. We actually got to recut her song 9 to 5. It’s a blessing to get to sing with such a pioneer of a woman.”

One thing is for sure, and that is that a biopic of Parton absolutely needs to happen as soon as possible. We can’t wait to see who gets this coveted role when it finally does!
