Allegations Against Bill Murray Shut Down Film Production

According to reports, a film starring Bill Murray has paused production after the iconic actor was accused of “inappropriate behavior” on set.

Deadline, Variety, and People have all reported that work on the film Being Mortal is paused following the allegations. In an email to the cast and crew, producers noted:

“Late last week, we were made aware of a complaint, and we immediately looked into it. After reviewing the circumstances, it has been decided that production cannot continue at this time.”

Being Mortal is directed and written by Aziz Ansari, himself a target of accusations of harassment and abuse. The reports state that Ansari is not a party to any of the allegations. There is no timetable set on when production will resume on the film, which will be Ansari’s directorial debut. It is also unclear if Murray will return to the set.

The Many Feuds Of Bill Murray

This isn’t the first time Bill Murray has been accused of inappropriate behavior. Charlie’s Angels co-star Lucy Liu said Murray was rude and condescending to her during rehearsals. Liu stood up for herself and later spoke cordially with Murray.

Despite his popular persona, he is known as a difficult person to work with.

Murray’s most well-known feud is perhaps with fellow SNL original cast member Chevy Chase.* The two had to be separated when Chase returned to host the late-night sketch comedy show. Murray describes the dust-up as a moment of anger towards Chase for abandoning the show after one year on the air.

“Because we all felt mad he had left us, and somehow I was the avenging angel, who had to speak for everyone. But Chevy and I are friends now. It’s all fine.”

Murray, known as the “Murricane” for his on-set mood swings, was described by Scrooged director Richard Donner as“superbly creative but occasionally difficult.”

Murray’s on-set feuds contrast with his off-set persona as a lovable weirdo who eschews traditional fame to show up and random bars to sing karaoke with strangers.

A lot of Bill’s co-workers love and respect him while understanding that his comedic brilliance might come with a temper tantrum or two.

If I were to speculate, I would guess that what happened on the set of Being Mortal was similar to what was listed above. In today’s climate, emotional outbursts of anger, especially from older men, are not tolerated the same way they were ten years ago.

Hopefully, peace will prevail. But it is hard to teach an old dog new tricks.
