Cain Velasquez

Former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez has been arrested.

Velasquez, who left MMA to compete in pro wrestling, was charged with attempted murder.

According to information obtained by MMA Fighting, Velasquez was involved in a shooting incident in San Jose on Monday.

Velasquez is being held without bond at the Santa Clara County Jail. 

The official San Jose Police Media Relations Twitter account posted “units are currently at the scene of a shooting near the intersection of Monterey Hwy and Bailey Ave. 

“One adult make shot at least once transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. One suspect in custody. Unknown motive or circumstances.

“Units have cleared the intersection. Cain Velasquez was the suspect arrested yesterday in connection with this incident. He was booked into Santa Clara County main jail for attempted murder.”

Velasquez, 39 years old, had multiple title reigns while competing for the UFC. He also had a brief stint with the WWE and AAA, a Mexico-based pro wrestling promotion. 

Injuries derailed the career of Velasquez, a former junior college national champion at Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge, Iowa. He went on to compete for Arizona State University before entering into a career in MMA.
