Whoopi Goldberg defended for comments

Last week, we reported that Whoopi Goldberg had been suspended by ABC for two weeks for saying on “The View” that the Holocaust was not about race. Now, Goldberg is being defended by an unlikely person as her suspension continues.

Goldberg’s Holocaust Comments

In case you missed it, check out the comments Holocaust Goldberg made that got her into this mess in the video below.

Goldberg is now surprisingly being defended by Hollywood actor Joshua Malina, who is best known for being on the long-running ABC television show “Scandal.” He was also in “The West Wing.”

This came as a shock, given the fact that just two months ago, Malina penned a scathing op-ed for The Atlantic in which he blasted Warner Bros. for hiring Mel Gibson for the latest installment of the Lethal Weapon movie series despite his history of making anti-Semitic remarks.

Malina Defends Goldberg

However, Malina stated this week that he sees a huge difference between Goldberg’s situation and Gibson’s.

“To me, there is a bad person who is a Jew hater, and then there’s Whoopi Goldberg, who misspoke or needed to clarify or educate or discuss,” Malina told Page Six. “She’s getting a two-week suspension [from ‘The View’], and he [Gibson], every time I turn on my computer, he’s starring in a new movie. Apparently he’s potentially going to direct Lethal Weapon 5. Let’s keep our focus on the worst of it. I find it appalling.”

“I didn’t hear what Whoopi said and thought, ‘That’s an anti-Semite. That’s someone that doesn’t like Jews.’ I just thought she was off,” Malina explained.

Malina believes that what she said was deeply misguided.

“My original take was I think there’s a lot of nuance in discussing, ‘What is race?’ I know I swabbed my cheek, sent it to a company and came back 89 percent Ashkenazi Jew, so I know it’s not just a religion, but I know you can convert to Judaism. I’m married to a woman who did convert.”

Goldberg Suspended

This comes one week after Goldberg was suspended by ABC for her ignorant comments.

“Effective immediately, I am suspending Whoopi Goldberg for two weeks for her wrong and hurtful comments,” ABC News president Kim Godwin said last Tuesday night, according to Fox News. “While Whoopi has apologized, I’ve asked her to take time to reflect and learn about the impact of her comments. The entire ABC News organization stands in solidarity with our Jewish colleagues, friends and communities.”

Despite Malina’s defense of Goldberg, many feel that suspending her is not enough, particularly given the fact that ABC fired Roseanne Barr for making comments that were deemed to be racist in 2018.

At the time of this writing, Goldberg is still set to resume her duties on “The View” next week, when her two-week suspension is up.

It will certainly be interesting to see if Goldberg continues to be able to dodge any permanent repercussions for her ignorant Holocaust remarks.
