Whoopi Goldberg suspended

Yesterday, we questioned whether or not ABC would fire Whoopi Goldberg after she offended millions by saying on “The View” that the Holocaust was not about race. While ABC has not yet fired her, the network has announced that Whoopi Goldberg has been suspended from “The View” for two weeks.

Unfortunately for ABC, however, many social media users are saying that suspending Goldberg is not enough, and that she should instead be fired.

Goldberg Suspended From ‘The View’

ABC News President Kim Godwin announced last night that Goldberg would be suspended “effective immediately.”

“While Whoopi has apologized, I’ve asked her to take time to reflect and learn about the impact of her comments,” Godwin continued, according to Daily Mail. “The entire ABC News organization stands in solidarity with our Jewish colleagues, friends, family and communities.”

‘The View’ Cohosts Furious

Sources told the Daily Beast that “The View” cohosts Joy Behar, Sunny Hostin, and Ana Navarro are “furious with the network’s decision” to suspend Goldberg. By the same token, however, some ABC executives are still “really upset and don’t understand why it took two days” for Goldberg to be punished by the network.

Goldberg currently makes around $96,000 per week on “The View,” and it is unclear at this time whether or not she will be paid during her suspension. ABC did not respond to a request from the media to comment on this.

The controversy began on Monday, when Goldberg said that Jews and Nazis were “two groups of white people,” and that therefore the Holocaust was about “inhumanity” and not race. Though she backtracked the next morning and apologized, the damage was already done.

Anti-Defamation League CEO Speaks Out

Jonathan Greenblatt, the CEO and National Director of the Anti-Defamation League, said on Tuesday night that he hopes Goldberg will use her two week suspension as a time for “introspection and learning.”

“Let’s hope that she can use this time, use this opportunity, and use her amazing platform to educate herself and to share what she learns with her audience and with the country at large,” he said, adding that the Holocaust was “absolutely about race.”

“I think [Whoopi] really, again, created a kind of confusion and hurt because the Holocaust was absolutely about race,” Greenblatt explained. “It was a racialized anti-semitism.”

People Took To Social Media Calling For Goldberg To Be Fired

Many feel that Goldberg being suspended is nothing more than a slap on the wrist, as she should instead be fired by a network that once fired Roseanne Barr for making racist comments:

With her offensive comments, Whoopi Goldberg both offended millions of people and exposed her own ignorance. Perhaps she should quit while she’s ahead and find a new career path, before she embarrasses herself even further.
