Kirk Cameron Shares His Path From Atheist To Finding God At 17 – ‘I Knew That If There Was A Heaven, I Wouldn’t Be Going There’

Former child star and 80’s heartthrob Kirk Cameron of “Growing Pains” is known these days for being one of the most devout Christians in Hollywood. However, many of Kirk Cameron’s fans might might be surprised to learn that he was once an atheist.

In a new interview, Cameron is opening up about how he managed to find God at the tender age of 17, when his acting career as a teen heartthrob was at its peak.

Kirk Cameron Finds God

While Cameron appeared to be living the dream as a 17 year-old boy who was adored by millions, he found himself questioning whether his A-list lifestyle was sustainable.

After dropping off a female actress at an acting class, Cameron sat in his car questioning if there was more to life for him.

“I knew that if there was a heaven, I wouldn’t be going there,” he admitted, adding that at the time, he was living a life of arrogance rather than one of servitude.

It was at that moment that Cameron realized that he needed to ask Jesus forgiveness, right then and there.

“God, if you’re there, would you please show me?” he remembered praying. “Would you forgive me for the wrong things I’ve done and make me the person that You want me to be?”

Kirk Cameron Finds Love

Now 51 years-old, Kirk Cameron is living the good life with his Christian wife Chelsea Noble. The two actually met on the set of his popular sitcom “Growing Pains” in the 1980s.

Aside from God himself, she played the biggest role in changing Cameron’s life.

“I found a girl,” Cameron said of his wife, according to The Blaze. “She’s beautiful on the inside; she’s beautiful on the outside. I married her and we’ve been married for 30 years. You have no idea how much more valuable that is. I’ve got six grown children who love God and still ask me my opinions about things, who still love to come home and be with me and my wife, and I’m on PragerU’s ‘Stories of Us.’ I mean, the story doesn’t really end much better than this.”

The Godly couple share 6 children – Olivia, James, Isabella, Luke, Ahna, and Jack Cameron – all of whom are now older than Cameron at the height of his teen stardom. He recently shared a family photo and it’s pretty amazing!

His Hollywood Life

A recent note from his daughter made Cameron look back on his life in Hollywood. The note read, “It’s the same boiling water that softens potatoes that hardens eggs. It just depends on what you’re made of.”

Cameron said of the note:

“So the same difficult challenges and influences of Hollywood that turn some people sour and make them narcissistic and bitter and joyless and afraid to not fit in is the same pressure that actually softened my heart and caused me to embrace gratitude and be thankful for the life that I have and want to use a platform and this Hollywood industry to advance the good.”

“I really think it’s what you’re made of. And if you don’t know what you’re made of, don’t look to your environment or your industry or other people to give you an identity. There was somebody who made you — ask Him. And you can be sure that the ending of the story is gonna be fantastic.”

God bless Kirk Cameron for continuing to spread the word of God, and for showing millions what a good Christian man looks like. If only there were more stars in Hollywood like him!
