Canelo Alvarez already has claimed titles in four boxing divisions. Now, he’s seeking a fifth.
Alvarez has been given permission to face WBC cruiserweight champion Ilunga Makabu. The WBC has confirmed the fight.
WBC officials approved the bout at the WBC 59th Convention in Mexico City. It was requested by Eddy Reynoso, the coach and manager for Alvarez.
As of now, plans are being drawn up for Alvarez and Makabu to square off in May or June of 2022.
“The WBC has approved unanimously Canelo to fight for the WBC cruiserweight championship of the world,” WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman said (thanks CNN for the quotes). “This is a surprise to me but I’m sure he will continue to make history.”
Alvarez scored his 57th career win and unified the super middleweight titles when he bested Caleb Plant. The 31-year-old has claimed championships at super welterweight, middleweight and light heavyweight.
Makabu has held the WBC cruiserweight title since 2020. He defeated Michal Cieslak for the vacant belt in January.
In December, he improved to 28-2 with a win over Olanrewaju Durodola.
