Jessica Simpson Reveals Heartbreaking Photo From The Height Of Her Addiction

Pop star Jessica Simpson has had her ups and downs. From the pressure of being in competition with Britney Spears, to the relentless mocking she received as a reality star – it’s been a ride. The spotlight isn’t kind to most people and few can survive its effects without some harsh consequences.

Simpson struggled with substance abuse for years before hitting her bottom and finding the courage to get sober.

November 1st is Jessica’s four-year anniversary of clean and sober living. To mark the occasion she showed a picture of herself from her low point. She doesn’t even look like the same person.

Jessica Simpson Is Four Years Sober

The honesty Jessica displayed here is astounding. While posts like these are often met with waves of support and love, it can still be hard to share something so dark and so deep.

The reason is the same reason you chose to abuse; you don’t love yourself and you can’t imagine why anyone else would either.

The cult of self-love can be a bit of delusion, but learning to accept yourself for all your flaws is vital for self-esteem.

Sobriety isn’t a one-time event. It is a lifetime of work and struggle.

Nick Lachey Doesn’t Want to Hear Her Side

Simpson’s ex-husband Nick Lachey doesn’t want to hear her side of their story because he lived it.

There are two sides to every story, especially when it comes to a divorce. I think Jessica and others are quick to make a villain of him but that is deeply unfair.

The spotlight burned him too, and I am sure he went through a lot of pain.

One Day At A Time

Jessica’s statement is a powerful one and you should read it in its entirety, but this is the part that really struck me:

The drinking wasn’t the issue. I was. I didn’t love myself. I didn’t respect my own power. Today I do. I have made nice with the fears and I have accepted the parts of my life that are just sad.

Substance abuse is rarely about the substance you’re addicted to. Especially when it comes to alcohol. You aren’t drinking and blacking out on a Wednesday because everything is going great.

You are obliterating yourself. Deluding yourself into believing it is better to float down a river of whiskey than to walk into the real world. That it is easier to be in a drunken stupor than confront the real world.

If you’re struggling with substance abuse there is help and there is hope. You can get help and start again today. One day at a time. By the grace of God.
