Floyd Mayweather Jr. Defends Kyrie Irving In Vaccine Plight

Boxing champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. posted a video this week voicing his personal support for NBA Brooklyn Nets star Kyrie Irving’s right to choose whether or not he gets the vaccine.

Floyd Mayweather Supports Kyrie Irving

Mayweather backed Irving for not getting vaccinated against COVID-19. A decision that resulted in the all-star point guard being benched by the Brooklyn Nets.

“Kyrie, what’s up? I know you’re going through a lot. We had a chance to hang out in 2016, when you represented America – when you represented the Red, White, and Blue. You only want to be treated fairly,” Mayweather said, referring to Irving playing in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.

Mayweather proceeded to take a stand for individuals’ right to choose whether or not to get vaccinated.

“America is the land of the free. Freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and supposedly, freedom to choose. Never be controlled by money,” Mayweather said, according to Michigan Live. “I respect you for having some integrity and being your own man. A free mind makes his own choices, and an enslaved mind follows the crowd. Stand for something or fall for anything.”

“One man can lead a revolution to stand up and fight for what’s right,” he added. “One choice, one word, one action can change the world. It’s crazy how people hate you for being a leader. I hope your actions encourage many others to stand up and say, ‘enough is enough.’ Respect to you Kyrie and power to the people.”

NBA Benches Kyrie Irving Over Vaccine

This comes weeks after Nets’ general manager Sean Marks said that Irving will not be playing until he gets the vaccine.

“Given the evolving nature of the situation and after thorough deliberation, we have decided Kyrie Irving will not play or practice with the team until he is eligible to be a full participant,” Marks said, according to NJ.com.

“Kyrie has made a personal choice, and we respect his individual right to choose,” he added. “Currently the choice restricts his ability to be a full-time member of the team, and we will not permit any member of our team to participate with part-time availability.”

Irving Defends Staying Unvaccinated

Irving said last month that his decision not to get vaccinated is “about being true to what feels good for me.”

“The financial consequences, I know I do not want to even do that,” Irving said, according to ESPN. “But it is reality that in order to be in New York City, in order to be on a team, I have to be vaccinated. I chose to be unvaccinated, and that was my choice, and I would ask you all to just respect that choice.

“I am going to just continue to stay in shape, be ready to play, be ready to rock out with my teammates and just be part of this whole thing,” he added. “This is not a political thing; this is not about the NBA, not about any organization. This is about my life and what I am choosing to do.”

Americans everywhere should have the right to choose whether or not to get vaccinated, without having to worry about losing their jobs.

James Conrad

James Conrad’s passion for politics is only overshadowed by his longstanding interest in Hollywood. His unique perspective as a gay conservative fuels him to challenge celebrity views and those who think they have a right to tell anyone how to think or vote. James proudly wields his minority point of view to combat identity politics and cut through his typecast. Fun fact: James’ guilty pleasure is the British royal family.
