While appearing on “The View” this week, Katie Couric revealed whether or not she still talks to Matt Lauer. The former “Today” show hosts’ relationship has been a hot topic with Couric’s new book “Going There” hitting shelves.

Of course, it wasn’t long ago that Katie Couric was taking heat for referring to her former co-host Matt Lauer as a “decent” man:

So clearly Couric jumped at the chance to go on record.

Does Katie Couric Still Talk To Matt Lauer?

When asked by “The View” cohost Sunny Hostin if she still has a relationship with her disgraced former “Today” show cohost, Couric replied by saying “I don’t.”

Couric explained that while “there were a lot of whispers about a lot of people” and that was “part of the ether,” it wasn’t in her “world” because she was caring for her first husband Jay Monahan, who died of colon cancer in 1998, and their two children.

“I kind of wanted to keep away from all the rumor mills and the gossip,” she claimed, according to ABC News.

Katie Couric Talks Matt Lauer Allegations

Couric went on to say that it was “stunning” and a “crushingly disappointing” to hear the allegations that were made against Lauer in 2017.

“Matt, he was … considered a really good person and a good guy, and obviously had this very dark side where he was callous and reckless and worse to some of the women with whom he worked and who worked for him,” Couric said.

Lauer was fired and swiftly “cancelled” that year when multiple women accused him of sexual misconduct in the workplace. He had hosted the “Today” show with Couric for years before she left the program in 2006.

Couric claims that she was never approached by anyone directly with allegations about Lauer but also said there were “many times” she’s helped or advised women who were in “uncomfortable situations” and “gone to bat for them”.

In the end, Couric says she “would have done the same thing” had she known about the sexual assault allegations against Lauer while working on the “Today” show.

The Me Too Movement

“I think we’ve all learned a lot in processing the Me Too movement about what does it mean to have a consensual relationship, how really you can’t if someone is responsible for your financial fate and your professional job security and understanding power dynamics,” Couric said. “I just hope it’s a very different environment in many of these workplaces than it was in the ’90s and early 2000s.”

In this same interview, Couric recalled men making comments about her breasts at the workplace early on in her career.

“This is something that you think of from ‘Mad Men,’ not in 1980,” Couric said.

It must hurt Matt Lauer to see yet another person from his past – especially someone as close as Katie Couric – trying to distance themselves from him.

It’s become abundantly clear that for Lauer, cancellation is permanent.
