Whoopi Goldberg Torches Cancel Culture – ‘The Truth Doesn’t Seem To Matter’

Academy Award-winning star and tv personality Whoopi Goldberg spoke out this week to slam cancel culture, saying that she feels that “the truth doesn’t seem to matter as much these days.”

Goldberg Discusses Cancel Culture

Goldberg opened up to Variety about her own experience with cancel culture, which came after she allegedly made a joke about President George W. Bush in 2004 at a fundraising event.

“I would describe that situation as a lot of people covering their backsides, because the joke was never about him,” Goldberg remembered. “But no one ever stood up and said, ‘Hey, here’s what actually happened.’ And they put it in the newspaper. And you notice, they’d never seen what I exactly said, or what I said at all. But all somebody has to do is say you said it.”

Goldberg Doubles Down

“Because there is cancel culture, people will call or text and say, ‘I’m not buying your product. This is who you have talking about your product, me and my 5 million followers, if you keep her, we’re not going to buy your car, or we’re not going to buy your shampoo or we’re not going to buy your toothbrush or we’re not going to buy your Pampers,'” she added.

For the next five years, Goldberg couldn’t get a job in show business. That only changed for her when Barbara Walters offered her a spot on the ABC talk show “The View.”

“Lucky for me, Barbara Walters offered me a job and said, ‘Hey, would you like to do this?’” Goldberg recalled. “And I was like, ‘You know, I’m not in favor in the general public.’ [Barbara] said, ‘You’ll be perfect.'”

Other Celebrities Speak Out Against Cancel Culture

Other celebrities have spoken out about cancel culture recently as well, including Sharon Stone.

“I think cancel culture is the stupidest thing I have ever seen happen,” she said earlier this year, according to Fox News. “I think when people say things that they feel and mean, and it’s offensive to you, it’s a brilliant opportunity for everyone to learn and grow and understand each other.”

Comedian Billy Crystal, a personal friend of Goldberg’s, feels similarly about cancel culture.

“It’s becoming a minefield and I get it,” he recently said. “I don’t like it, I understand it. … I just keep doing what I’m doing and that’s all you can do right now. It’s a totally different world [now] and it doesn’t mean you have to like it.”

There’s no denying that cancel culture is completely out of control, and it’s gone way too far. It’s nice to see that more celebrities are speaking out against it, as that’s the only way we’re going to overcome it as a society.

James Conrad

James Conrad’s passion for politics is only overshadowed by his longstanding interest in Hollywood. His unique perspective as a gay conservative fuels him to challenge celebrity views and those who think they have a right to tell anyone how to think or vote. James proudly wields his minority point of view to combat identity politics and cut through his typecast. Fun fact: James’ guilty pleasure is the British royal family.
