Monica Lewinsky recently revealed the hardest part about producing the upcoming miniseries “Impeachment: American Crime Story” was having to relive the darkest period of her life.

In “Impeachment,” Beanie Feldstein portrays Lewinsky during the time she was having an affair with then-President Bill Clinton while working as a 22-year-old White House intern. The affair eventually led to America’s first impeachment proceedings in over a century, and forever tainted Lewinsky’s reputation.

“Impeachment” is the third season of self-contained miniseries on FX; the first was “The People v. O. J. Simpson” and the second “The Assassination of Gianni Versace.”

Lewinsky Opens Up

“You go to bed one night a private person, and the next day you’re a public human being and the whole world hates you. And you might go to jail. And you’re going to bankrupt your family. And, and, and …” Lewinsky, 48, told The Hollywood Reporter.

“And just because I wasn’t on the news every night for 20 years in the same way that I was in 1998 doesn’t mean that this story ended,” she added. “Ten years on, I still could not get a job. I couldn’t support myself.”

Lewinsky even had to hire a therapist to sit with her via Zoom while she made notations for the series, just so she wouldn’t be alone.

“Because it’s hard,” she said. “It’s really hard, especially with the dramatic license that needs to be taken.”

When she first heard about the show years ago, Lewinsky was understandably wary of it.

She became more open to it when Executive Producer Ryan Murphy (American Horror Story) asked her to be a producer and promised that the series would focus on the women involved in the scandal.

“Of course I have a number of selfish reasons for wanting to participate, but a big goal for me is that this never happens to another young person again,” she said.

Lewinsky Insists On Including Thong Scene

Lewinsky even insisted on including an infamous scene involving her flashing her thong. Other producers wanted to cut it to protect her.

“Listen, I would’ve loved to have been really selfish and said, ‘That’s great that you guys think we don’t have to show that, fantastic,’ but I’m incredibly experienced in understanding how people see this story,” she explained.

“So, ultimately, I felt two things: One was that I shouldn’t get a pass because I’m a producer; and two, that it was unfair to the team and to the project because it would leave everybody vulnerable,” Lewinsky stated.

The only details that Lewinsky kept to from the crew were specifics of the intimate moments between the Clinton family for a “myriad” of “obvious reasons.”

“Impeachment” will be premiering on FX September 7. It will certainly be interesting to see what details come to light from this show.
