UFC 264 was remembered for Conor McGregor suffering a serious injury and his post-fight comments made towards winner Dustin Poirier.
Now, UFC president Dana White is disclosing some interesting information.
McGregor suffered a break to his tibia and fibula in the final moments of the opening round vs. Poirier. In an interview with FOX News, White stated that the former two-division UFC champion asked for his ankles to be taped due to having arthritis.
White added that the UFC and officials knew of injury concern coming in involving “Notorious.” The request to have his ankles taped was approved, but ultimately, the Irish fighter decided against it.
“He’s had ankle issues for the last couple of years and he had asked if he could take his ankles coming into this fight,” White said. “He got clearance to do it from the Nevada State Athletic Commission and then he opted not to tape them. I don’t know why.”
Asked about his timeframe for a return, White said that remains up in the air.
“It’s going to take him a year to recover from this one before he can come back, so I don’t know,” he said. “The fight game is a tough game and the kid’s cemented a massive legacy for himself and made a lot of money.
“We’ll see how the rest of his career plays out.”
