Quarterback Alex Smith Puzzled By Colin Kaepernick’s Absence From The NFL

After a concussion put an end to the best season of his career back in 2012, Alex Smith lost his job as the quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers to Colin Kaepernick, who was with the team through the 2016 season.

Alex Smith Discusses Colin Kaepernick

Kaepernick has not been signed by another team since leaving the 49ers. And, this doesn’t sit well with Smith.

“It still doesn’t make sense,” Smith said of Kaepernick’s situation while appearing on 10 Questions With Kyle Brandt.

“The run that he went on the last year we were together when we went to the Super Bowl…[it] was so crazy to watch,” Smith added. “Truly one of the historic runs in football to see what he was doing. He still holds records from that time period. Really special. It’s crazy that fast forward to only a couple of years after that he’s out of the league. You couldn’t even grasp it. You couldn’t understand it.”

During his time with the 49ers, Kaepernick became a household name for taking a knee during the national anthem.

Though he claimed he was doing this to protest against racial inequality in the United States, many saw this as a clear sign of disrespect for the American flag and those who have fought and died for it.

Smith Says America ‘Wasn’t Ready’ For Kaepernick

Despite the fact that Kaepernick led the 49ers to a losing record in his final season with the team, Smith believes that he only hasn’t gotten signed by another NFL team since because the country “wasn’t ready” for a player like him to call out issues in America.

“I think it’s so tragic looking at it. I think he was ahead of his time, certainly, trying to call out social injustice, especially around police reform,” Smith said. “The country wasn’t ready. Nobody was ready for it, and he’s sitting there trying to tell everybody through a completely peaceful manner about some of the things going on in this country that had been going on for a long time.”

“To see the backlash that happened, yeah, it hurts,” he continued. “The country wasn’t ready for it and he suffered the repercussions with his job and then how brave he was. He lost his livelihood.”

To this day, Smith can’t quite believe that Kaepernick lost his career in the NFL.

“He was probably one of the guys I felt had the brightest future ahead of him. There was one point, I think it was like Ron Jaworski or whoever, was calling him the greatest quarterback ever from a talent perspective early on in his career,” Smith said.

“Then to think it was all gone two years later because of a peaceful demonstration, [it’s] tragic, sad, but obviously he was incredibly brave and [I am] certainly proud of him, to even know him and what he’s done,” Smith added. “Fast forward a few years later and I think we all were like ‘He obviously was trying to tell us something’ and knew it.”

Smith’s Hopes For Kaepernick’s Future

These days, Smith is just hoping that Kaepernick will continue to help America.

“To see what’s happened this last year and hopefully will continue to happen going forward, you hope that he’ll be part of the answer and the solution,” he said.

Kaepernick has made millions of dollars off playing the victim and portraying the NFL as a racist institution.

He’s become a martyr in the eyes of liberals, and made bashing America hip and cool in the eyes of the left.

Despite what Smith says, Colin Kaepernick has not been signed by another NFL team because of his own lack of talent, and because he would just be a distraction to other players.

James Conrad’s passion for politics is only overshadowed by his longstanding interest in Hollywood. His unique perspective as a gay conservative fuels him to challenge celebrity views and those who think they have a right to tell anyone how to think or vote. James proudly wields his minority point of view to combat identity politics and cut through his typecast. Fun fact: James’ guilty pleasure is the British royal family.
