It’s been 23 years since the iconic Princess Diana was killed in a car crash, but she is still missed by millions of fans to this day.
Diana’s Nieces Pay Tribute To Her
Her twin nieces, Lady Amelia and Lady Eliza Spencer, were only five years old when Diana was killed, but they have never forgotten her.
Now, as the twins prepare to grace the cover of Tatler for the March issue, they are opening up about their memories of the aunt that they adored.
“We always just knew her as our aunt,” Eliza explained. “Growing up in South Africa, I really had very little idea of how significant she was in the world until I was much older.”

She went on to say that Diana was “incredibly warm, maternal and loving. She always made an effort to connect with us as children and had a talent for reading children’s hearts.”
Diana Saves Nieces From Paparazzi
Amelia and Eliza are the daughters of Diana’s brother Charles, 9th Earl Spencer, whom the late princess was very close to. There is one memory of Diana in particular that the twins have never forgotten all these years later.
“Obviously it could have been quite terrifying for us, being so young and not understanding what was happening. But she turned it into a game of who could get back to the car first,” Eliza remembered. “It was amazing how she protected us in a way that made us feel safe and not frightened. We had no idea what she was doing at the time.”
The memory is a particularly ominous and sad one, as Diana would go on to die while she was being chased by the paparazzi in Paris. Though the twins knew the loss was devastating, they were too young at the time to grasp the enormity of it.
“As a child, I realized the enormity of the loss for my father and family,” Eliza added. “It was only later that I came to understand the significance of the loss of her as a figure in the world.”

Twins Looking To The Future
Things are looking up for the twins these days, as Amelia is preparing to get married to her fiancée Greg Mallet. Her father has suggested that she get married on their family estate of Althorp, where he and Diana grew up, but she said she has not made up her mind yet.
“It’s our family home, it’s beautiful,” she said. “We would be very lucky to get married there, but Cape Town is where we grew up and there is a possibility that we might do it here too.”
Regardless of where she gets married, it’s safe to say that Diana would be very proud of the strong young women that Amelia and Eliza have become!
