Recently word came that Khamzat Chimaev has withdrawn from the UFC’s January 20th card and a scrap with Leon Edwards.

Initially, it wasn’t clear why the rising star had dropped out of the bout. But since then, Chimaev’s manager Ali Abdelaziz, has explained that complications stemming from COVID-19 is why the fighter dropped out.

Chimaev still recovering from COVID-19 complications

Since news of Chimaev’s removal from the Fight Island event made headlines, ESPN’s Brett Okamato reported the following.

Statement on Khamzhat Chimaev (@KChimaev), via his manager Ali Abdelaziz (@AliAbdelaziz00). “Khamzat had coronavirus and when he went back to gym, his lungs did not recover 100%. He needs time for his lungs to recover, and right now it’s about taking that necessary time.”

Hopefully, Chimaev continues to recover and he’s ready to fight again sooner than later.

Edwards also contracted COVID-19 a few weeks ago and as a result, the fight was postponed from its original date, December 19th. ‘Rocky’ also reportedly incurred serious symptoms and lost multiple pounds.
